Kode 9, LD [Hyperdub]

This track is like cutting up and dissecting Kode 9’s brain; swirling around inside are his musical inspirations ranging from Detroit techno, late nineties garage, dubstep and deep house.

Teaming up with LD [a] on this latest Hyperdub [l] release, Kode 9 [a] has managed to spill the contents of his head onto this five minute track, which epitomises not only the new direction for his productions but also setting a new paradigm for the Hyperdub label.

Incorporating a looped female vocal over a crazed broken beat, the track borrows from the best elements of garage but also throws into the mix the deep FX that have been so heavily employed by the likes of 2562 and Martyn.

The track distances itself from the heavy emphasis on beats and ‘wobble’, and has turned the new dubstep flavour into something not only smoother, but also sexier.

Kode 9 has begun to blend in housier elements into his DJ sets with this release following his monstrous, soulful remix of Geiom’s ‘Reminissin’ which had to be one of the best uses of vocals in dubstep.

With far more crossover potential than anything else released this year, this dub-house-techno offering is something which everyone should check out.
