Back to the Time
Back to the Time
Paul Ritch [Fumakilla]
11 September, 2007 | 9.54AMFrench producer Paul Ritch’s sharp, effortlessly functional style has already resulted in some well-received outings for labels including Get Physical, Resopal and Boxer.
Here, Paul Ritch
pops up on Berlin’s reliably consistent Fumakilla
for two tracks of heads-down, stripped-back tech-house.
The title track, ‘Back to the Time’, is the bigger sounding of the two, with huge drops, straight-cut stabs and a flicker of carnival spirit nestling in among the grooves.
Tensely arranged and full of movement, it’s rolling enough to work into a housier set, but edgy enough for the techno heads, too.
‘Vatican’s Bell’ is sharper, meaner, and a little bit weirder - and all the better for it.
Classic dub techno shards poke relentlessly across a tumbling, clipped rhythm, before a huge breakdown gives way to an unusual, haunting mid-section dominated by a dramatic plucked string riff.
Held down by a sinister, well-rounded bassline, it’s clearly aimed at the darker corners of the dancefloor, but with enough creative flourishes to mark it out from the seemingly limitless supply of moody minimalism knocking about.
