Azuli predicts the sound of WMC 2010
3 March, 2010 | 3.49PMThe winter gloves are off. Dance music needs a new manicure. With Miami’s Winter Music Conference just around the corner, DJs are busy filling their record boxes with the latest and greatest beats they can get their hands on.
David Piccioni from Azuli is a seasoned pro when it comes to predicting what tracks will be big at WMC. His London record label has flown the flag for house music since 1991, and the imprint has released a Miami WMC compilation every March for the last ten years.
Azuli’s success at cultivating WMC bombs comes from Piccioni’s ability to sniff out mainroom growers - tracks that were released some time ago, but have yet to realise their full dancefloor potential - and wonderful new rhythms that by the year’s end, will be bona fide club anthems.
With every man and his blog pondering what tunes will be big in Miami’s clubs and beach parties at the end of this month, we called up our trustworthy compadre, the old Mr. Piccioni, to lead our anthem guessing ceremony (which will run throughout March).
David Piccioni’s WMC 2010 top tracks
Seamus Haji Vs Dino Psaras feat Rudi ‘My Destiny’
Seamus Haji and his associate go all cutting-edge and infuse their big room sound with a bit of moodiness.
This is a great crossover track that will work in both the larger clubs and the cooler underground haunts.
Filthy Rich ‘Arumba’
More tasty African ethnic tribal madness. I’m really loving the stuff from this scene; it reminds me of the long Monday afternoons in DC10 Ibiza, that used to stretch into Tuesday night!
Deadmau5 ‘Strobe’
The man in the mask is still managing to make great house with the injected elements of trance slotted in to take you up to cloud 9. Already a monster track!
Kaiserdisco ‘Amalfino’
Ok, here we go. The minimal scene has gone all funky and ethnic and ‘Amalfino’ is what it’s all about!
Hypnotic rhythms and swinging drums hark back to the days of DJ Sneak and his relentless beats. Expect to hear loads of this type of sound around Miami.
David Guetta ‘Grrrr’
What happened here? David Guetta abandons his chart topping formulas and shows us all that he is still in touch with the cooler sound of clubbing.
Hard driving hypnotic beats make this an underground stormer!
Celeda ‘The Underground’
Yep, it’s a remix of the Celeda classic. This is so Miami, and not just during conference time.
It conjures up great memories of Danny Tenaglia’s classic sets at Groove Jet and Space. Now revamped for 2010 by Abel Ramos.
Dennis Ferrer ‘Hey Hey’
Dennis Ferrer is the MAN! Merging the new with the old, this guy has obviously been around, and has the groove in his heart.
A deep groove with soul and some excellent production. Play it loud!
Martijn ten Velden and Afroboogie ‘Cowbell’
The title says it all. I played this in one club that reputedly has one of the best soundsystems in the world, and the cowbells in this drove me absolutely crazy.
In fact they are still ringing in my head now. More funky tribal madness that works every time.
NDKJ ‘Funkiest Star’
What is it about this record that drives people nuts when I put it on? The longer you play it, the better it gets.
It’s simple and sneaks up on you. Four minute in, and it’s not changed a bit, but by then you don’t care, it’s too late - you’re hooked!
Saeed Younan ‘Yeah Ha’
American tribal meets European funk, and the house goes mental! It has moody hypnotic beats fused with some of that traditional Miami tribal sound.
But it doesn’t get too deep as to freak out the brethren from the other side of the Atlantic. Saeed’s been around for sometime and has really come of age - great stuff.
