Avant composer Karlheinz Stockhausen gives us 80 years

Karlheinz Stockhausen, known for his influential early avant compositions, often incorporating electronics, has passed away at the age of 80.

The German composer released a prominent body of work primarily from the 1950s through the 1970s utilizing theories involving mathematics, communication and phonetics (the study of the sound of human speech).

Stockhausen has been an influence on many musicians from various walks through his compositions and also through his instructions.

Having been a contemporary of experimental composer John Cage, among others, he went on to mentor La Monte Young and influence artists such as the Beatles — his image is found amongst several 20th century icons on the cover art for ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.
