Austra: Spellwork
Austra: Spellwork
12 January, 2012 | 12.01PMThere’s been no shortage of moody electro-pop fronted by women with a distinctive vocal presence in the past couple of years. One of the best examples in 2011 was Toronto’s Austra and their album Feel It Break. Their chiming, chugging pop miniatures were clearly made under the influence of Fever Ray, and you can hear echoes of touchstones like Kate Bush along with contemporary outliers like Wildbirds and Peacedrums; nevertheless, Austra do a convincing job of creating their own world and drawing you deep inside, even if the scenery looks familiar.
For listeners of a clubbier predilection, Sparkle gathers 10 remixers of Austra’s songs by artists like Mark Pistel, Planningtorock, and Still Going; of particular note is a remix of “Beat and The Pulse,” one of the band’s standout tracks, by Panorama Bar resident and deep-house mood-setter extraordinaire Steffi.
The video above, released just this week, is intended as a tribute to Smashing Pumpkins’ videos of the ‘90s, says Stelmanis. Check it out, and for even more Austra, see the deluxe version of Feel It Break, featuring nine extra tracks, including B-sides, unreleased cuts and a stunning cover of Roy Orbison’s “Crying.”
