Audion to lead R and S remix re-releases

No savvy record collection is complete without the black horse of the classic dance music label R & S lurking somewhere in the record sleeves.

The Belgian label led the way in importing the sounds of Detroit techno to Europe in the early 1990s and embellishing it with a distinctly European flavour.

Now the label, silent for much of this decade, is returning with a series of impressive releases.

After jumping back into the scene with re-releases of digitally remastered classic long players from Aphex Twin, Model 500, Ken Ishii, Joey Beltram and Dave Angel, the next impressive outing for R&S is an unmixed remix CD of some of the label’s classic tracks.

Matthew Dear working under his Audion guise is rumoured to be leading the charge with a reconstruction of the classic ‘Plastic Dreams’ amongst an impressive line-up of as yet unannounced remixers.

The label is promising new material in addition to the re-releases as well as a new mix CD series involving some “amazing names.”

Renaat Vandepapeliere and his wife Sabine Maes began R&S in 1984.

Famed for releasing classics like Joey Beltram’s dark E anthem ‘Energy Flash,’ Jaydee ‘Plastic Dreams’ or Aphex Twin’s Digeridoo’ and Selected Ambient Works 85-92, it earned a name for riding on the cutting edge of techno, ambient and even drum ’n’ bass.

At the close of the 1990s the label ran out of steam but has been revived by a new UK management team lead by James Ingle.
