Attack Decay Sustain Release

Simian Mobile Disco [Wichita]

The Simian Mobile Disco [a] ‘Attack Decay Sustain Release’ album kicks like a mule from the word go. Intro track ‘Sleep Deprivation’ begins like a pulsating headache and explodes into your conscience like a Soulwax Nite Versions gig.

‘Tits and Acid’ sounds like a sonic car crash where the paramedics turn up in a fluro ambulance and a paramedic accidentally (on purpose) gives you 5mls of MDMA.

‘It’s The Beat’ is a frenzied homage to 90’s rave, while Scott sounds like something straight out of Bladerunner.

Yet entwined in the twisted metal of this techno machinery is a heart that, at choice moments, routes this audio hedonism into something that makes you remember, smile and feel.

‘Hustler’ and ‘I Got This Down’ may be programmed dance floor hits but the depth of production, attention to detail and nostalgic touches provide enough spark to ignite this into a blazing inferno of something more than just a turbo party album.

There’s an obvious nod to the 80’s with ‘I Believe’ which sounds like a bad George Michael record and doesn’t seem to belong on the album at all. It’s like someone included it on here for their Mum.

Wooden on the other hand sounds more like the days of Orbital and 808 State - intelligent downtempo electronica, while the never ending vocal story of Love is more infectious than a nit in a primary school.

A homage to new rave, old rave, Sci fi and erm George Michael, SMD strut their mastery over the scene, reducing us to powerless disco puppets that wiggle our arses, shake our heads and punch the air with our fists while they pull all the strings.
