Artists To Watch 2012: Vessel

Artists To Watch 2012: Vessel

Ok, so the artist known as Vessel is a reticent one, as you’ll see from his answers below. But we’ll forgive him: excuse the cliché, but in his case, the music really does speak for itself.

The 22-year-old producer, aka Sebastian Gainsborough, is part of a small collective of Bristol producers currently twisting up house, garage and various shades of bass music into unusual, captivating forms. So far his work has appeared on Throwing Snow’s Left_Blank and Astro:Dynamics, young labels pushing the limits of club sounds. (Those are also great places to check the work of Vessel’s peers, like Zhou, Walton and El Kid, with whom Vessel recorded the excellent VeElSkSiEdL mini-album.)

This week, Tri Angle records announced Vessel as the label’s latest signing, adding him to a roster that includes avant-club acts like Holy Other, Clams Casino, and Balam Acab.

Read on check out Vessel’s music, including two unreleased tunes from his Tri Angle debut.

Vessel – Ton [Left_Blank]

What kind of music do you make, and how long have you been doing it for?

I make electronic music, and have been doing so for a few years now.

What’s your proudest musical achievement so far?

My proudest musical achievement? Too many to list.

Vessel – Patina [Astro:Dynamics]

What projects—singles, LPs, remixes, residencies, tours, etc.—do you have coming up for 2012? Beyond that, what do you hope to have accomplished by this time next year?

There are exciting Vessel projects planned for 2012, as well as potential excursions for some darker aliases. By this time next year, I hope my hairline won’t have receded. Any more than it already has.

Any predictions (positive or negative) for electronic dance music in 2012?

Predictions for the topography of electronic dance music in 2012: The formally mighty mountainous regions of dubstep will finally fully decompose into murky, bubbling pits of waste (men), occasionally spitting up the fossils of those what would not jump ship. Incestuous relations between various new forms of electronica will reach new lows. And, just maybe, people will get bored of using finger clicks in tunes.

Finally, could you tip us off to an up-and-coming artist or label that you think people should know about?

El Kid, Kahn, Zhou, Jabu, Killing Sound, REI. And DJ Poo.
