Artists To Watch 2012: Store N Forward

Hamburg’s Store N Forward are hardly newcomers—they’ve been together since 2001, and their catalog on Beatport goes all the way back to 2006—but it was last year that saw the duo really come into their own, as singles like “Listen to Life,” “Amenity” and “Dark Temptation” captured the attention of uplifting-trance fans around the word, taking them from their home on Afterglow all the way to the mother of all trance labels, Armada.

Their tracks “Pepper,” “Salt” and “Listen To Life” have just been compiled on Afterglow’s Heroes of Afterglow: Best of Trance 2011; check it out along with their new top 10 chart, Store N Forward’s 2012 Start Ups, and read on for an interview with the duo.

What kind of music do you make, and how long have you been doing it for?

Whatever we are basically creating at first (e.g. house, chillout, pop), it leads finally into trance and progressive trance, or it never sees the light of day. We have been producing together since 2001 here in Hamburg, Germany.

What’s your proudest musical achievement so far?

Due to the fact that we very much found our sound within the last year and were able to place all four of our singles in 2011 in the Beatport Trance Top 10, this makes us really proud. We are so thankful about the huge response on it from all over the world. 2011 really was a milestone for us.

What projects—singles, LPs, remixes, residencies, tours, etc.—do you have coming up for 2012? Beyond that, what do you hope to have accomplished by this time next year?

In the first quarter you can already be prepared for a Store N Forward Remix for Mike Koglin & Temp Guisto, a remix bundle of our latest single, ”Listen To Life,” with mixes of Germany’s Cressida and Iranians Masoud and a new single afterwards, called “Oregano”. (For all the SNF insiders out there: we will ride the spice thing a little longer…)

Actually we already started preparing 2012 in October 2011 by producing some basics for vocalists we want to work with. If everything works out with it, these vocal trance collaborations will probably get released between the 2nd and 4th quarters of 2012. Besides all those plans we have in mind, we hope that we are just able to get straight forward, being creative, having fun while producing new stuff and preparing our weekly podcasts/radio shows and increasing our level of quantity as well as quality of course.

Any predictions (positive or negative) for electronic dance music in 2012?

Personally we think that trance and progressive will get mixed up even more with house, electro and minimal elements than in the last years. But that is a a way of hoping that trance gets more attractive to the world again. We are crossing the fingers!

Finally, could you tip us off to an up-and-coming artist or label that you think people should know about?

It is really hard to pick one out, because 2011 was a very creative year for trance and electronic music. As mentioned, things are merging together, and some artists and labels already understand how opportunities expand when you are not trapped in a single style anymore. To name a few of them who really understand that are artists like NHato, Norin and Rad, Johan Malmgren and also Shato & Paulrockseek from our partner label Tool Trance, which is definitely one of those labels with a great future. Also keep an eye on Infrasonic and of course keep your eyes on Afterglow Records – our home base!
