Artists to Watch 2011: Nina Kraviz

Artists to Watch 2011: Nina Kraviz

In her Resident Advisor bio, the rising star Nina Kraviz bills herself simply as a “record collector in her dreams.” The Siberian-born producer and DJ is certainly collecting records—her own, that is, as she racks up credits on hotly tipped labels like Radio Slave’s Rekids [l], Efdemin’s Naif, and Jus-Ed’s Underground Quality. Her music’s plenty dreamy, as well, cutting an elegant path between disco and deep house, with passion to spare. Long a resident at Moscow’s acclaimed Propaganda club, she’s rapidly converting clubbers around the world to her raw, emotive, in-it-for-the-right-reasons ways.

What kind of music do you make, and how long have you been doing it for?

Hmm, let me think. I would say I make music that delivers my emotions. And as I am very emotional myself, it depends very much on what I am going through at the moment. It could be just a simple house groove that makes you wanna dance or a love song, abstract techno or just an atmosphere with spoken words.

What projects do you have coming up for 2011? Beyond that, what do you hope to have accomplished by this time next year?

Currently I am working on my album for Rekids. This means that I don’t have much time left for anything else. Yet I am collaborating with Urban Tribe. Thinking of a new EP for Underground Quality. I am looking very much forward to join Rekids nights throughout 2011, especially that Rekids Golden Week tour in Japan, part of the label’s fifth-birthday celebrations.

Apart from all this I am working on my video for “I’m Week” at the moment. At first sight it looks very beautiful! I am wondering how it’s gonna look in the end. After editing is done…

If you had to make one music-related resolution for the new year, what would it be?

Find more cool acid records!

Finally, could you tip us off to an up-and-coming artist that you think people should know about?

Hard to say, but Vakula [a] is very talented. Indeed.
