Artists to Watch 2011: Jacques Renault

Artists to Watch 2011: Jacques Renault

Jacques Renault—yes, that is his real name, a fact that goes some way towards explaining the Brooklynite’s effortless cool—turned out one of our very favorite cuts of 2010 with his remix of Midnight Magic’s “Beam Me Up.” Runaway, his duo with Marcos Cabral, has been at the forefront of the new-school old-school house scene for a couple of years now, thanks to their records for Rekids [l], Permanent Vacation [l], Endless Flight [l], I’m A Cliche, Spectral Sound [l], and labels of a similar ilk. And Runaway’s On The Prowl label is quickly becoming a buy-on-sight affair, at least for fans of deep, emotive house and inventive disco. The attitude is old-school, the ideas enduring—all of which might explain why we couldn’t resist including Renault in our artists-to-watch roundup for 2011. Just like his namesake, this dude is going places.

What kind of music do you make, and how long have you been doing it for?

I make disco house / deep house tracks. I’ve been involved with music since an early age, always doing different things. I would say my first successful releases were when I started my collaborative project called Runaway, which I do with fellow Brooklyn DJ/producer, Marcos Cabral.

What projects do you have coming up for 2011? Beyond that, what do you hope to have accomplished by this time next year?

New solo and Runaway original work for our own On The Prowl Records as well as a new Andy Ash 12” featuring a Nicholas (No More Hits) and Marcos Cabral remix. As for remixes, Marcos and I remixed Mic Newman for 2020 Vision’s new FINA label as well as Native Underground’s recent single “Push 4 Love” on Wurst, both due out soon. I have new remixes of Holy Ghost! on DFA/Eskuche, DC LARUE on Disco Deviance, Ali Love on Backyard, Poolside on Future Classic (featuring vocals by Tiffany Roth of Midnight Magic) and Das Moth on Cutters. A few more mixes and collaborations that may be too early to mention…

Upcoming dates in Brazil, all over North America, and a month-long tour in Europe this March. I’m an open book for the upcoming year. Planning on spending plenty of more time in the studio, work on our label, and do some more touring around the world.

If you had to make one music-related resolution for the new year, what would it be?

I think all creative people want to evolve, and the only way to do that is spend more time on what you do. I’m listening to all types of music these days, old and new, and picking up a few different tricks that I’d like to bring to the music I make. I like the pace of everything right now, and I’m looking forward to doing more original music in the upcoming year.

Finally, could you tip us off to an up-and-coming artist that you think people should know about?

Always difficult to name only one, this time I’ll say Ben Sun. His track “Salty Tears” on Voyeurhythm was one of my picks of last year, I think he’s someone to watch in 2011 for sure.
