Artists to Watch 2011: Don Rimini
Artists to Watch 2011: Don Rimini
18 January, 2011 | 12.09PM“Always humid"—that’s the weather report in the world of Don Rimini, and who are we to argue?
Named after an Italian resort town that’s long been famous for its nightlife, Don Rimini is Xavier Gasseman, a Parisian producer who’s been making records (and trouble) for Switzerland’s Mental Groove
label since 2008, as well as turning out fire-starting remixes for the likes of The Count And Sinden
, Kitsune’s Beataucue, and even Young MC and his hip-house classic, “Bust a Move.”
Despite his familiarity with the electro scene at its cheekiest, Don Rimini has never limited himself to the bangers-and-mashups set. Last year, his “Nlarge Your Parties” EP suggested a new way forward for clever, infectious club music, and to hear him tell it, there’s more where that came from. Read on to meet the Don.
What kind of music do you make, and how long have you been doing it for?
I’ve been producing seriously for four or five years now. I am a bit selfish as I try to make the music that I would want to hear or play during my DJ sets. Sometimes it can be some downright nasty and dirty stuff, sometimes sexy, sometimes violent, and always humid, yet always energetic and efficient. Even if my music is in itself basic techno or house, my music is in perpetual evolution and fluctuates according to my current mood.
What projects—singles, LPs, remixes, residencies, tours, etc… do you have coming up for 2011?
So many things you can’t begin to imagine… haha, I am working 24/7! Obviously I will continue to defend with upmost fervor my last EP mini-album ”Nlarge Your Parties,” which I’m really proud of. Hey, by the way we just released the “Whatever” video, I love the subliminal images. Part of the fun was about slowing down the video in order to seek out all the hidden images… ahahah.
Two remixes, for Spoek Mathambo on BBE![[a]](http://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif)
and Beautaucue on Kitsune![[a]](http://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif)
, should be out in the few next weeks. Then some edits… I’m really looking forwards to hearing these tracks pump out in the clubs! But my main purpose these days is essentially “The Perfect Prescription.” This is the first compilation of my own choosing. It will be out on January 17 on Mental Groove
. For this compilation, I searched only exclusive tracks from new, up-and-coming artists that totally smashed me up, that are truly awesome. They are the next big thing! I’m so excited about the whole thing.
I’m also working on an “Nlarge Your Remixes” EP. I just received some remixes by some great and renowned artists, but it’ s still confidential… ahahahah, to be continued. The first remixes are absolutely huge, no doubt there’s gonna be some nice surprises! Last but not least, I’m also producing my next EP. Hope that should be out next spring… and, of course, touring a lot, travelling the world to DJ, however I keep releasing mixes every month, and a bunch of surprises… Believe me, the best is yet to come!!!
Beyond that, what do you hope to have accomplished by this time next year?
Humm… To have spread the joy, happiness, frenzy and preferably all at the same time… ahahahah. I hope to turn my sound into something sexier yet. Certainly less noise and saturation, more melodies, musicality. Obviously I want to keep the energy and power while adding more melodious and harmonic aspects. This is the way I see things and hope that they turn out.
If you had to make one music-related resolution for the new year, what would it be?
Keep exploring sound and production techniques. Finding new, interesting ways to produce my music. I want more subtlety, more melodies, more efficiency—and not just for myself, for the whole dance or electro scene. I really intend to discover a more housey vibe this year. More is not necessary better. You don’t need to be noisy to belt out powerful tunes in a nightclub. Obviously, I would really like to do the best parties, the best festivals! Party like an absolute monster and make my pals dance all night! So basically 2011 stands for having more fun than ever before…
Finally, could you tip us off to an up-and-coming artist that you think people should know about?
Hehe. Take a peek at “The Perfect Prescription” selection. Guys like Keith, Tagteam Terror, Ado, Modek, Blatta & Inesha, Surfing Leons, The Town, Titan and Scuola Furano are all amazing. Sincerely. They sound big and represent the next generation! I’m also into stuff like Dem Slacker, Carte Blanche, Tony Senghore
, Supabeatz
, The Subs
, Highbloo, Breakbot, Mikix the Cat… Djedjotronic
is doing it right now too… I also really like labels like Sound Pellegrino or No Brainer Records. They’re bringing something fresh, new and spankingly shiny and crisp!
