Artist of the Week: Pär Grindvik

Berlin is the Mecca of minimal, and producers and DJs are flocking to the city in their hundreds like flies to a big pile of poo. Beatportal’s Artist of the Week is one such Berlin immigrant, 27-year-old Swedish dude Pär Grindvik, who is currently one of the hottest names on the minimal scene.

Having had a string of killer minimal tunes on Beatport recently (check out his bad ass beats below on the player), we decided to catch up with the lad to chat about his influences and production style.

1. How did you first get into electronic music?

“I started when I was pretty young, playing around on synthesizers. My older brother who was a big fan of Kraftwerk and early italo music inspired me.

“But it was my cousin that introduced me to his machines and the rave scene in late 1980s.”

2. Why did you decide to start making electronic music?

“I guess I knew at an early age what I wanted to do, and I wanted to make sounds that made me happy. “

3. Why do you think your music stands out?

“Well, I did come to a point some years ago when I asked myself ‘who am I making music for?’”

“Was it for me or was I just trying to figure out what people want?

“Since then I’ve been doing music just for me, and trying to find sounds that sparkle my own curiosity.

“And I have never felt so good in my whole life! It’s great that people seem to like it to.”

4. You’re a bit of a minimal master, so where do you see electronic music progressing musically in the next 12 months?

“Hmm, well I always runs in circles when it comes to music but at the same time I try to find a new way to perform old ideas. I have no idea actually.”

5. What’s your favourite club in the world, and why do you love it so much?

“Berghain here in Berlin is amazing because its atmosphere is unbeatable. The mixture of people that go there and the mutual respect clubbers show each other is just great.”

6. How do you feel about being awarded ‘Artist of the Week’ on Beatport?

“I think it’s great that people like what I’m doing and Beatport is getting more and more important for my work, so being a part of it like this means loads for me.”
