Artist of the Week: 2000 and One

Tech house has recently been given an injection of acid funk thanks for Dutch producer 2000 and One. The productions of 36-year-old Dylan Hermelijn [a] are groove-laden masterpieces that fuse old skool house rhythms with modern techno sounds and that’s why we’ve made him Beatportal’s Artist of the Week.

We caught up with Dylan in Amsterdam to find out about more about his past and what he thinks of today’s scene.

1. Which artists first got you interested in electronic music?

I got into the music in the early 1980s via stuff like Cybotron, Egyptian Lover, Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow.

Later I got more into acid house and house music from Chicago as well as early Detroit techno.

I found all this great music in local Amsterdam record stores and shops in London.

2. And is that what inspired you to make your own tunes?

I just got a feeling that I needed to express myself through dance music.

Just like how painters or writers or any other artist needs to express themselves.

Because I listened to early house music, ambient, electronic, hip hop, and reggae I think that huge musical background has enabled my music to stand out.

I’ve been producing music since the late 1980s.

3. Name one artist that has influenced and inspired you more than anyone else.

That’s a difficult one, but no doubt Carl Craig, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Armando and Mike Dunn are my biggest influences.

And you know these guys are becoming important again because it’s all going back to the early days and becoming just one sound again, true house music.

4. You must have been to a fair few clubs in your life, but what’s your favourite?

“I have to say that Berghain in Berlin is the best club in the world because it has a great soundsystem and very very open-minded party people.
Plus the guys that run that place really love the music, and I respect that.

7. How do you feel about being awarded ‘Artist of the Week’ on Beatport?

“I am very honoured. A lot of people are a bit sceptical about the digital format, but Beatport has shown me that digital is the future for sure.
