17 April, 2009 | 2.05AMPerhaps you’ve yet to hear about London’s nudisco label Electric Minds
. If so, their 10th release which celebrates the label’s first anniversary is a fine example of the kind of high quality disco-inspired music they’re about.
With this release, Electric Minds pays tribute to one of the least known but perhaps most respected contributors to the disco genre; Arthur Russell (1952 – 1992).
Some have said Arthur’s productions inspired the originators of dance music, and his more direct influence can be found in much of the house and nudisco music of today.
Electric Minds’ boss Dolan Bergin explains, “Such is the importance of Russell’s contribution to the modern music scene that many consider his work to be untouchable, but in this release all three producers have carefully picked out key elements of his songs whilst recording an entirely new and up to date soundtrack.”
Paying tribute and putting an updated twist on his work are Yam Who
, Ilija Rudman
and Innervisions’ Lil Tony
, the results of which is a three-tracker of immense beauty.
Yam Who and Rudman’s interpretations of ‘Wax The Van’ work in classic house sounds with nudisco grooves whilst Lil Tony brings more of a techier flavour to ‘Treehouse’ that is full of finesse and stays true to the Innervisions style.
With Âme, Sasse, Dimitri From Paris, Luke Solomon, Milton Jackson, Laurent Garnier and Joey Negro all over this release, it’s bound to give Electric Minds and Russell some much deserved kudos.
