2 December, 2011 | 7.59AMA couple months back, we posted a hypnotic video” that Walter Gibbons created to accompany Arthur Russell’s avant-disco classic “Let’s Go Swimming,” originally released in 1986 and recently reissued by Audika. Now Ubuweb, a web archive of sound art and the 20th century avant-garde, has unearthed a 20-minute Arthur Russell film by Phill Niblock.
Originally included on the bonus DVD (long out of print) accompanying Audika’s 2004 World of Echo reissue, the film is basically just a series of extreme close-ups of Russell as he sings and plays cello; it’s at once abstract and startlingly intimate, a perfect complement for Russell’s own singular work. You can watch the whole thing on Ubuweb here.
Russell’s “Let’s Go Swimming,” World of Echo, “Springfield” and Calling Out of Context anthology are all available on Beatport, and if you’re not familiar with Niblock’s deep drones, explore his albums for the great Touch label here—it’s some of the purest ambient music you’ll ever encounter.
