(a.k.a.Myers Briggs), Toronto’s live PA wonder, is making some serious leaps forward in the national and even international music scene as a notable producer.
His ‘Resolutions EP’ topped Alan Oldham’s chart for Tresor (Berlin), and his track ‘Forever’ has also been celebrated by James Holden, Nic Fanciulli, and Hernan Cattaneo.
Today he has just given us word that this month he is signing an administrative licensing deal with Fabricpublishing.com that could really open the door further for him to secure placement of his evocative and emotive music in advertisements, in television or in film soundtracks.
Recently he also completed a remix for Claudio Mate’s release ‘Everything is OK in Detroit’ which is due out by early September.
Not only is Arthur Oskan making heads turn and ears perk with his intricate epic sounding tracks, (his nine-minute long ‘Forever’ currently appears on John Digweed’s ‘Transmission Vol. 4’ compilation), but Oskan’s original tracks are found on labels including Sentient Sound, Beretta, Thoughtless Music, Restructured, Heavy Industries, Secret Weapon and Mono.
Beatport caught up with Arthur Oskan a.k.a. Myers Briggs
from his home in Toronto to gain perspective on his work and to hear about his exciting plans for the fall.
Which dates are confirmed for your European tour?
I land in Munich on September 17th, Regensberg on the 19th and Aachen on the 20th of September.
There are also dates in the works for Salerno, Athens and Istanbul.
Promoters can make requests for available dates by emailing bookings@arthuroskan.com.
How did you come to be on the Beretta label? What sold them on your sound?
I met Brian Kage in 2004.
We kept in touch over the years, but I’ve really only started releasing and remixing on Beretta Music
in the last couple of years.
They had already heard my past releases on Restructured, Cratesavers and Sentient, so we just went from there.
I just try and focus on making tracks I’m happy with, and for the most part I never know where they’ll end up.
The process keeps my writing process pretty loose.
Your live sets and solid productions have been known to take really impressive musical journeys. What is it you try to do with your music each time you approach an audience?
I try to challenge myself.
As an artist, I try to push the envelope – taking risks with sounds and arrangements.
Sometimes it doesn’t always work depending on the venue, but at the very least I put myself out there and try something new.
When it does work, it can create a serious energy in the room.
I try and use as many live elements in my sets as I can, keeping drum machines and synths open in my software for changes on the fly.
I’ve found that it really works well, emulating an environment much like a live gear setting – with boxes, synths and a console.
Maybe it’s something I never really let go from my early days without a computer.
I feel I’ve reached a point where I want a better balance between pre-loaded loops and live elements.
Who are you favourite artists and labels at the moment?
I’m really digging Neurotron as of late. Yasua Sato has also been high on my list.
Are Toronto producers being appreciated in Toronto today by event promoters and music lovers?
It’s easy to develop a love/hate relationship with Toronto.
There are so many artists, DJs, and collectives all battling for the same audience nearly every weekend.
We have such a solid base of producers here that rarely play out, and when they do they’re usually involved in the promotions themselves.
I see the scene as not all that different from how it was ten years ago.
Promoters have a high appreciation for what we do here and I think we’ll be seeing a lot more artists coming up through the ranks.
What is coming up next for you in terms of new releases?
I just finished a remix for Dana Bergquist on Discoteca.
I’ve got another one on tap for Rennie Foster and I’m wrapping up a follow-up EP for Sean Deason’s Matrix imprint, due out late in the fall.
As well I am doing another EP for Beretta Grey.
Aside from that, I’m finishing a group of tracks to turn into a full length album.
No release plans yet, but will get the info on my site soon.
