An intense night for San Francisco

An intense night for San Francisco

When we started the Sasha [a] and John Digweed [a] tour, the final date Coachella Festival seemed like a distant galaxy, a time and place so far away that we would first have to travel light years to reach it.

Well that journey is almost over. Last night Sasha and John Digweed reached the light at the end of that tunnel in San Francisco.

Even former marine turned tour manager Patrick Tetrick seemed more relaxed and happy before the gig.

“No one died, we didn’t lose anybody, we didn’t break or lose any equipment, the boys are happy, every show was perfect, we didn’t have any technical problems, the bus is still in one piece,” he churned out.

The list of accomplishments for him is long as it has been his responsibility to hold it all together.

Down on the floor at The Warfield, the atmosphere was intense and hot, as the lights shooting off the LED screens revealed hundreds of clubbers with their arms in the air.

Backstage Sasha was musing over the load in details of The Warfield’s previous performers from that month - underneath Sasha and John Digweed’s paper was sheets from the Editors, Marilyn Manson, and Gorgol Bordello.

“Marilyn Manson has two buses and three trucks, so it goes to show how easy our show is,” he said, with a grin.

Sasha and John Digweed are a rare breed in the DJ world, able to sell out giant venues and put on a rock concert atmosphere, but they are no Marilyn Manson.

They play dark underground clubs. They aren’t on MTV.

That said, The Warfield is the place to play in San Fransico.

“Grateful Dead played at The Warfield like a hundred times,” said Patrick Tetrick, S&D’s tour manager.

“Not many electronic music acts get to play in this prestigious venue.”

And it’s easy to see why. With it’s gorgeous high domed ceiling, multi-layered seating, and huge stage it’s difficult to imagine many DJs or electronic music artists able to occupy such a large, daunting performance space.

Yet despite Sasha and John’s understated progressive house and dark dubby techno they owned The Warfield last night, and once again Digweed was hounded for autographs whilst Sasha legged it onto the bus.

We’re now traveling through the desert on the way to Coachella Festival, and everyone has a calm look about them.

The experience of the last four weeks shows.
