An evil interview with Evil Nine

An evil interview with Evil Nine

Evil Nine crash-landed onto the modern dance scene like an alien asteroid hitting a 20th century urban city at the turn of the century.

Immediately finding their way onto Adam Freeland’s electro chic, then breakbeat label, Marine Parade infected the breaks scene with their contagious, raw-sounding breaks like a virus infecting a densely populated area.

The dance community was instantly turned towards their characteristic sounds of live drums, hip-hop vocals, and dirty gain-driven bass guitars.

The world as we know it was about to change.

The boys otherwise known as Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy had massive hits with their remix of Ils ‘Music’, and ‘Crooked’, featuring Aesop Rock, and went on to score ‘Best Newcomers’ at the annual Breakspoll awards.

After the brain curdling ‘You Can Be Special Too’ album, released over four years ago, it appeared as if the heavy monster duo had sought seclusion. This year saw the duo arise, seeking new blood with a thirst for global domination.

With the new zombie-fuelled release ‘They Live!’ now released, Beatportal took its chance to ask the living dead duo nine evil questions:

It’s been four years since your last album – what have you been doing all this time?

Pat: Working out how the Christ you write your second album after not being in the studio for ages, getting high, reading, grieving, watching, DJing, listening, flying, crying, procreating, laughing, shitting, pissing, etc.

And what’s with the new zombie image?

Tom: What can we say? We like zombies. A lot.

I suppose if I was gonna elaborate I would say that we always watched a lot of zombie movies and while recording the album we were listening to a lot of old horror soundtracks by people like Fabio Frizzi , who we sampled on one of the tracks, John Carpenter , Riz Ortolani , Tangerine Dream and more.

We were totally surrounded by these sounds and images and so the zombie thing just seemed so so right .

How do you feel about your label contemporaries swanning off to California to record their respective artist albums?

Pat: It’s no problem, we had a race with Adam (Freeland) and Alex (Metric) to see who would finish their album first and we won (IN YOUR FACE BITCHES!!), we’re currently busy basking in our own sweet glory as neither of them have finished their own records, although they both sound superawesome.

It’s such a great feeling not only to have finished a ‘difficult second album’ but to have an album that we absolutely love and are proud of.

It really makes no difference what country we write it in, once we were in the studio we just went balls out trying to finish the album and didn’t have time to do anything else outside of the studio so we could have been anywhere really.

During the making of your new album there were rumours circulating of forming a heavy metal side project. Is there any truth in this?

Tom: Not much truth in it except that when we started the album we were a bit tired of making club tunes, and so the music we were coming out with was fairly out there, a strange kind of rock.

After a while though we realised we couldnt play any of it out. So we re-thought a bit ... there’s still a small element of heavy metal side project in there however nestled between the beats .

Your Fabric mix CD was amazingly successful and spanned across several genres. Any plans for new mix projects?

Pat: Nothing’s set in stone or even wet cement at the moment but we’ll definitely be doing a mix album or two after the album is released. We wanna do some more club mixes but we both wanna do something a bit different as well, something that spans loads of other genres and shows off our exceptional taste in music.

I’ve heard from a very reliable source you’ve been involved in shooting a John Carpenter style promo video. Is there anything you can give away?

Tom: Yeah, me and Pat have been getting our act on!  It’s gonna be a series of three short films riffing on common themes that crop up in zombie movies. But it’s turned on its head a bit as its the people who look normal who act and move like zombies and it’s us (the zombies) who talk and act normal. A crazy idea that might just work .. the first one is a bit like a troma version of The Office .

If and when you take your act on tour with a full on live show, who would you ideally like to support?

Pat: Shit, I don’t know. We love so much live music it would be hard to pin down just one name and it would also be a bit weird playing to their audiences who probably hate our music. Maybe Sonic Youth, Iggy and the Stooges, Queens of the Stone Age, Carcass, Devo, TV On The Radio......

On a factor of 1-9, how evil are you actually?

Tom: When you meet us you might guess that we were 1 evil but that’s just part of our evil plot, we want you to think that . We are actually 9 out of 9 evil .

Describe your new album in 9, not so necessarily evil, words

Pat: Epic, diabolical, flagitious, cinematic, meaty, immoral, malevolent, pestilent, awesome!
