Mexican trio Somnus Corp are still relative newcomers to the underground progressive scene, but are already gaining recognition from DJs such as John Digweed, Sasha and Nick Warren with their powerful atmospheric house sound.

While their released body of work is still in its infancy, this EP project entitled ‘Alma En Casa’ is a superb introduction to their work.

The first offering on this three track EP is the sweeping melody soaked house grooves of ‘Expo 86’.

It’s a totally unadulterated piece of progressive influenced music, but maintains enough atmosphere and depth to maintain interest.

The Bladerunner-esque synth delay slipped into the peak section of the track brings a cool late night 3am vibe to the overall mood and direction.

‘Boogie Nights’ meanwhile, sticks to the melodic leanings set out by the previous track, but ventures more towards the early to mid-set part of a DJ set.

Its understated funky beats and deep bass form a tight, bouncing groove layer that is punctuated by the use of a somewhat eerie vocal refrain, teased throughout the track.

Finally, ‘26000 Tunes’ rounds things out with a driving peak-time piece of music that makes its intentions clear from the opening onset, the rolling bassline and strong percussive layers give way to a simplistic but cleverly layered synth lead that keeps the energy level and tension rising, culminating in a big euphonic climax.

A guaranteed reaction maker if all else fails.
