Album review: ‘Armin van Buuren - A State of Trance 2008’

If you want to stay one step ahead of the trance music scene, all you have to do is tune into Armin van Buuren’s award winning radio show ‘A State of Trance.’ He wasn’t voted the world’s number one DJ for nothing.

And he’s definitely living up to his title with the release of the eagerly awaited fifth edition of the annual ‘A State of Trance’ mix compilation series.

‘A State of Trance 2008’ follows the same concept of 2006 and 2007, with the year’s best tracks categorised into two CDs – ‘On the Beach’ and ‘In the Club’.

Inspired by a summer spent in Ibiza with his Armada night, Armin says: “I heard all these beautiful lounge compilations and I thought, why not do that in a trance way?

“It’s the ultimate album to take on holiday or when you travel. CD1 is for the beach as it’s more mellow, while CD2 showcases the harder stuff, preparing you for your night out in a club or festival.”

Although a little disappointingly he hasn’t included some of the records he was hammering earlier in the year, such as Orjan Nilsen’s ‘La Guitarra’, Lens’ ‘Beyond the Shadows’ or Dash Berlin’s ‘Till the Sky Falls Down’. Highlights include his own ‘Unforgivable’, DJ Shah’s ‘Back to You’, ‘Rewire’ by Robert Nickson and trance’s latest up and coming star Daniel Kandi.
