Album of the Week: Oliver Koletzki ‘Get Wasted’
24 July, 2007 | 4.38AM- Section: Music News
Oliver Koltezki has risen up the techno and electro house ranks since his 2005 debut single ‘Mückenschwarm’ was picked up by Sven Väth for Cocoon Recordings. Now the Berlin based producer and DJ drops his debut album ‘Get Wasted’, a bold dancefloor focused record full of warm summer vibes.
“It’s a real party album without compromises,” says Koletzki about the LP on his own record label Stil Vor Talent.
Releasing the record on his own label meant he didn’t have to compromise any artistic freedom - he made it exactly the way he wanted to.
Featuring 11 tracks of blissful soulful techno, monster big room electro and chunky minimal, Koletzki has managed to turn in a driving peak time party album.
“I guess the name ‘Get Wasted’ should reflect this a little bit,” he tells Beatportal.
“The main idea was a simple one; to bring love and summer happiness to all the dancefloors and living room parties out there.”
One important rule Koletzki wanted to abide by when making ‘Get Wasted’ was to make sure all of the tracks carried his signature Koletzki electro-tinged sound.
And despite having collaborated with a few of his producer buddies - Martin Eyerer, Kiki, Florian Meindl, Ziggy Kinder - the Koletzki flavour is still very much apparent.
“I think one important attribute of ‘Get Wasted’ is the big variety of styles on the album, but all the tracks keep the typical Koletzki sound,” he says.
“Also I like melodies that have a big value of recognition.”
On the record there are plenty of melodic moments.
Kiki and Koletzki’s ‘Don’t Forget To Go Home’ is a wonky progressive number with a recognisable and infectious melody, whilst ‘Requim Fur Die Vernunft’ features funky 1970s disco loops and trumpet hits over techno grit and flowing house beats.
“Most of the tracks on the album are from the last three years,” Oliver says.
“They are my favourite songs and I kept them especially for the album, like ‘Song For S’,” which is a happy electro house record with a big synth breakdown.
“It really was a labour of love and if I had more time or space I would have done an album with 50 tracks,” reveals Koletzki.
‘Get Wasted’ has a definitive party vibe about it, something that developed from Oliver Koletzki’s own nights out in Berlin.
“A big influence was the music that I hear when I go out with my friends when I have time off,” he says.
“I tried to get the right balance between dancefloor and home-listening, but there are a few tracks like ‘Get Wasted Part 2’ and ‘Don´t Forget To Go Home’ which are definitely aimed at the dancefloor.
“But you can listen to most of the songs at home at a private warm-up party, or even whilst you’re doing the ironing.”
