Album of the Week: Kenneth James Gibson, ‘Delusional Tales and Non-Silence’
20 August, 2010 | 6.48AMLA’s Kenneth James Gibson goes by many names—Dubloner, Eight Frozen Modules, Premature Wig, Reverse Commuter, pendics.shuffle" rel="external"][a]pendics.shuffle—but he sticks to his own name on ‘Delusional Tales and Non-Silence’, his first full-length since 2005’s ‘Crumbling and Responding’, released under his Eight Frozen Modules alias.
The decision to forego any pseudonymous funny business makes sense, given the music’s directness. Where Gibson’s other aliases have variously explored IDM, dub techno, dancehall, and more, ‘Delusional Tales’ sinks deep into velvety tech house that’s both more straightforward and more sensual.
That makes it a great fit for Culprit, a young label founded by LA’s Droog crew that’s put out records from Hot Natured, Lee Foss, Inxec & Matt Tolfrey, and SECT. Gibson’s taut, decidedly trippy tracks are perfectly suited to the vibe of affairs like Droog’s rooftop parties at the Standard Hotel—well, at least as we imagine them, anyway: Gibson’s sultry, subtly funky bass washes over you like a warm, dry breeze, and his sparkling high end evokes the city lights that sprawl out to the horizon.
You can practically smell the not-so-distant desert in these tracks, with their powder-dry percussion and gusts of long-distance reverb. (Hell, ‘This Whole Time’ even features melancholic acoustic guitars recalling Ry Cooder’s high-plains drifting.)
Gibson’s finely detailed, nuanced production is topped off with just the right dose of vocals—growled and muttered, left low in the mix. It might be a lover whispering into your ear, or maybe just the devil on your shoulder, tempting you deeper into delusion.
