Album of the Week: 2020Vision presents We Love Space Sundays

This week’s album pick is a hybrid of sorts. We Love Space Sundays commemorates 2020Vision’s residency at the We Love parties at Space Ibiza this summer. Mixed by label head Ralph Lawson [a], the mix doubles as a showcase for the Leeds-based label, highlighting this year’s big releases from Hector, Burnski, Audiojack, and more, along with a few 2020 classics, like Lawson’s own 1997 mix of Blaze’s “Lovelee Dae.”

The mix moves from blissed-out disco of Ray Mang’s “Ocean Mix” through a dozen flavors of deep, pumping, dubbed-out house; there’s a careful touch of vocals running throughout, but only enough to ensure a warm, sensual vibe—never enough to tip things into divaland. For all its sun-drenched pleasures, it’s a mix that works just as well now that sweater weather is upon us.

We asked Lawson to walk us through some of his picks for the mix; read on to see what he has to say about six of the session’s highlights.

2020Soundsystem “Ocean (Ray Mang Remix)”

The mix opens with “Ocean” from 2020Soundsystem. It is so important to have a strong opening track that sets a theme and “Ocean” does everything I needed it to do. It’s not fast, so it sets quite a relaxed pace, but as soon as Fernando’s bassline hits, we are off and dancing. The version on the album is an edit I made of two of the Ray Mang remixes he made for us. The Mang man is on fire right now with productions for DFA, Rong & Nang, and he did an amazing job of taking our album track, keeping the vocal and bassline intact but adding great drums and synths. “Ocean” has been our closing track at the festivals this year and I have special memories of people getting down to it at the Big Chill and Garden Festival Croatia.

Art of Tones feat. dOP, “Call the Shots”

This track actually came out last year and did quite well but I always felt it deserved more. It was a big track on the terrace at We Love for me so it was a firm favourite to be included. We got dOP in to do the vocals well before they became so big so it was another good reason to give it another try for me. I just think it is a unique track with a classic house feel, but the vocal has a strange original almost R&B edge which makes it really stands out. We are re-releasing it as a single in October with Argy and Fred Everything remixes.

Simon Baker, “The Trick” (Glimpse remix)

I have just signed Glimpse in collaboration with Martin Dawson for a single and it came out of this remix. I think Glimpse is an original talent and his album Runner on Crosstown is well worth checking out. He can even sing and appears on Simon Baker’s forthcoming album. Simon has been prolific lately and is turning into a major force. He is constantly touring and has been resident at Kehakuma in Ibiza all summer. On the mix I actually use the drums from his original version over the Glimpse remix.

Melohman & Javi Bora, “Tierra (Julien Chaptal Remix)”

These guys are new signings from Mallorca. I met them in Ibiza, and they are forming a new wave of Balearic producers taking the clubbing spirit of the islands and creating a new, locally based pool of musicians. Jimpster has been killing “Bambata” off the same EP, but the cut for me is “Tierra.” I love the original version but I used the remix from Julien Chaptal on the mix as it fit better, energy-wise. The original is more of a warm-up track, but a truly excellent one that has stayed in my box all year. I advise you to check out the whole EP.

Bursnki, “Jigsaw”

Burnski was introduced to me as a 19-year-old by Denney (who also produces) at my club Back to Basics. He passed me a demo tape and I couldn’t believe how advanced his sounds were. We signed him immediately to Infant, which is run by Simon Baker through 2020Vision, then introduced him onto 2020. He has also recorded for Poker Flat, Dessous, Morris Audio, and Hot Natured. At 24 he is even better now and a real name to watch. His last 2020Vision EP featured “Coming Home,” “The Poet” and the track you have here, “Jigsaw.” I actually wanted to include “Coming Home” for the We Love mix but again, I just couldn’t get it to work out in the mix. “Jigsaw” is also a beauty though. I made a little loop out of the 2020Soundsystem “Sliding Away” vocal and laid it over the top for the mix.

Audiojack, “Motion Sickness”

The Audiojack boys are well known to Beatport and have had more smashes on here than most other artists have in a whole career. “Motion Sickness” is indeed “sick.” A highly original track that came out of a time of soul-searching for the lads where they were looking for new directions and sounds. We had knocked quite a few tracks back and they were getting despondent but then hit me up with this beast. Again, a very original sounding track that is hard to categorize—we have even moved its genre twice on Beatport! Is it house, tech house or techno? You decide!
