Adam Marshall at Pixel Gallery in Toronto
Adam Marshall at Pixel Gallery in Toronto
20 May, 2008 | 10.28AMDuring this past Victoria Day weekend, Toronto was treated to a great techno party that turned into a laid-back block soiree at Pixel gallery.
Pixel is nestled in one of Canada’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods, Kensington Market, which on nights like Friday turned into a hot spot of unpretentious music venues.
There are lots of older retro bars (that in some cases literally haven’t been updated for years) that host parties with music varying from dance rock, to Swedish pop, minimal techno and Jamaican reggae.
Just imagine the strange juxtaposition of all of this music at night in bar venues amidst a dark market full of shops closed for the evening that sell fresh fish, empanadas, and cheese during the day.
Inside the Pixel Gallery plenty of people were dancing to techno and there was some really cool interactive digital media art on display.
One exhibit involved gallery-goers painting with black ink on paper, pressing buttons on a touch screen computer, and manually manipulating the image they had created.
Everyone seemed to enjoy interacting with the art as participants rather than observers.
While Pixel is probing the relationship between art and technology and powering an engaging experience for their audiences, the team has also shown they can throw a fun party.
Adam Marshall
, Peter Mettler, Dave Cooper, Brandon Hocura, and Tom Kuo were all on the bill at Pixel.
Torontonian Adam Marshall, who has moved to Berlin, was back in the city to put the finishing touches on an upcoming KUJI release by Murr featuring Rosina.
While catching up with Adam he told me about what he finds unique about techno in Toronto.
Adam said, “I’d say one of the best things about the techno and house music scenes in Toronto is the diversity of cultures in the city.
“Everyone has many influences from all around the world, and I think it allows producers to have a much more open mind when it comes to composition.
“Sometimes it seems like Toronto producers skip from one style to the next, but I really just think there are so many cultural and ethnic influences in this city that you kind on keep finding new directions and inspiration without having to leave the city - which is cool.”
Adam also told me about the upcoming release on his label, New Kanada.
The EP by Adam will be called ‘Thelon’, which he named after a huge river in Northern Canada.
It will be remixed by Todd Sines and Deadbeat.
He said, “This one is going in a house direction… with a very New Jersey, New York house sound.”
And he added, “It’s dark, weird and fucked up of course.”
Techno music enthusiasts can look forward to another stellar release by Adam, which is sure to be fruitful, based on the examples set by his previous releases.
