For fans of: Flying Lotus, DJ Shadow, Prefuse 73

ABOUT THE RELEASE

The Origami Sketches EP is the first outing to set the mood for the upcoming Abstract Butta Fingas album called Phantom Cloud. ABF is in dark waters on this one, combining dubstep aesthetics with a leftfield approach to arranging. The original tune is a head-nodding wobbly affair staying true of ABF’s originality and ignorance of production preconceptions. The remixes are made by two of the most exciting beat-crushers of our time. Alcendor’s approach is a slow-jammed Eastern affair, full of occasional scratches and vocal snippets, making it an almost cheerful take on the tune. On the other hand, NSOK’s appropriately titled Dead Can Dub mix is a dubbed-out zombie dance around the main vocal line of Origami Sketches. A one of a kind trip indeed.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

As though composing a varied and slow motion metropolis, its details emerging gradually from a haze of sodium vapor, its pastiche assembled anecdotally like a series of overlapping recollections, ABF’s tunes represent a distinct aural vision that is brooding and mischievous, both constructed and entropic. ABF’s work not only emphatically establishes a mood, but also carves out a sense of cognitive space, which further inspires a visual mind wandering, engaging the imagination in a three-dimensional experience.
As a student of architecture and with a particular interest in the relationship between spatial conception and sound ABF, née Mbela Endeley, approaches the crafting of his tunes with a focus on the space his sounds create. It was after studying architecture that Endeley first picked up an MPC, a device which could be described as a sonic construction tool, and began building tunes that combined the influence of his studies with a host of musical affinities that range from traditional African to contemporary grime and dubstep (along with the usual suspects you might find along this spectrum—hip hop, trip hop, dancehall, dub, blues, funk, jazz, electronica).
Also an experienced selector with regular stints at LA spots like The Royal, Little Temple, The Mountain Bar, Grand Starr Jazz Club, and Turntable Lab, ABF has also opened for Quantic, Carlos Mena and Fransisco Aguabella.
