Absolut / Mescal

Intus [K2]

K2 [a] has really found its feet as a label quite quickly.

Somehow, its DJ-orientated remit still screams Kompakt while offering its own fresh perspective on the mother label’s pop-inflected style.

It’s also proved to be an excellent breeding ground for fresh talent, with Gui Boratto, John Dahlback and Robert Babicz all enjoying success through their K2 releases.

Just as interesting, however, are the brand new faces, of which Intus [a] is certainly one of the most exciting.

‘Mescal’ is a lolloping, cheeky lurcher of a track, which as its title suggests, twists a straight-ish ‘oompah’ Cologne bassline into a morphing, psychedelic mess, throwing your feet in entirely unexpected and pleasurable directions while a sweet melodic motif keeps the hands reaching for the stars.

We heard long standing Kompakt DJ play it as the sun rose at the label’s annual Total party in Cologne over the summer, and it sounded quite unlike anything else we’d heard for some time – in all the best ways.

‘Absolut’ is more direct, but still suffused with off-kilter narcotic twists that’ll bend minds and limbs at the right hour of night, or indeed, day.
