Above & Beyond’s Clive Rudloe

Above & Beyond’s Clive Rudloe

With DJ Magazine’s annual Top 100 DJs poll currently taking place, the flood of ‘vote for me’ emails from DJs and their agents has started. But in the inbox, amongst the self-congratulatory promotionals was a rather funny and clever video by trance trio Above & Beyond [a]

Their Clive Rudloe satirical video, which depicts a fictitious British wedding DJ discussing why he is the world’s No.1 DJ, has gained viral status and might just get Above & Beyond a few more votes.

“The idea came out of a discussion that the whole team was having about the DJ Magazine poll,” Above & Beyond’s Jono told Beatportal.

“We wanted to inject a bit of fun into proceedings, to stand out from all the ‘vote for me’ stuff that goes on.

“We had the idea of a film about a wedding DJ, and it kind of mushroomed from there.

“In the end we got so much good footage that it was a challenge to edit it down.

“There’s some bonus footage at www.myspace.com/cliverudloe and a podcast series on iTunes.”

Clive Rudloe: World’s No.1 DJ

DJ Magazine’s annual DJ poll has grown to become one of the biggest polls in dance music, and despite concerns about security and the legitimacy of recent results, being listed in the Top 100 still carries a lot of clout, especially in terms of DJ fees.

“It’s debatable how important the poll is,” said Jono.

“We’re certainly not expecting the Clive films to change people’s minds on who their favourite DJs are, but it should raise awareness of the poll itself and maybe encourage people to vote.

“And if a few new people discover our music than that’s a bonus.”

So who the hell is Clive Rudloe?

“Clive is played by a very talented actor called Alex Macqueen, who’s a friend of our manager,” said Jono.

“We had some ideas about his character traits and some basic story ideas like the balloons and being voted number one, but there was no script as such.

“We prompted Alex with a few key questions and he improvised it from there.”
