Ableton Live 6.0.5.
10 April, 2007 | 3.18AMAlright, first the bad news about Ableton Live. It is expensive (about 549 EUR/$599 US). The good news is everything else.
Ableton’s latest version of their well-known software was released in February (version 6.0.5) and already has a strong cult following: James Zabiela, Sasha (see photo gallery above), Diplo, Kaskade and Richie Hawtin all pay homage at the Live shrine.
The audio software is popular for its two in one nature. It is robust enough to use in the studio for building tracks, while still being flexible and easy enough to use out DJing (even after a few drinks).
You can geek out in front of your computer for hours in the session view of the program, exploring the vast instrument and effects racks.
When it is time for your Friday night gig, you can use the arrangement view to improvise on the fly. It is like show and tell.
There are some cool new features on this version of Ableton for those of you who keep track of things - QuickTime video support, more samples and a Deep Freeze function which allows you to edit a track while it is frozen.
The program has won an accolade of awards, including the 2007 Remix Technology Award for Best Digital Audio Work Station and IDMA’s Best Audio Software at this year’s Miami Winter Music Conference.
The bottom line is as a music collector, you are probably used to shelling out loads of your earnings to support your habit, so an Ableton purchase is simply more of the usual.
There is a reason this program is an industry leader.
If you want a cheaper habit, go back to collecting rocks instead of records.
