A smooth start for Shaka’s new label Corner Records
15 April, 2008 | 1.13PMAfter a year’s efforts, the inaugural release of Shaka’s new label has left port and is sailing smoothly into playlists worldwide.
Having made his name as a DJ in his native Switzerland and establishing a solid reputation as a producer through his critically acclaimed releases on Morris Audio, Floppy Funk, Stattmusik, and Revolver, Shaka
set out to sail into uncharted waters as a record label owner of Corner Records
.
Corner Record’s debut release, Smooth Sailing (available now on Beatport!), is a groovy funk influenced minimal house record, laden with hooks and tightly produced instrumentation, appealing to fans of house, minimal, and electro-funk alike.
Immersing himself in studio with vocal talent Lena Fennell, the lead singer of Bern based electro-pop group Magnetfisch, Shaka emerged with a stellar vocal performance which he moulded into a slick dancefloor mover. Smooth Sailing reflects Shaka’s growth as a musician as he delves into new musical territories influenced by the modern house styles of Matthew Herbert and Frivolous, and seated deep in the electronic-funk sounds of the early years of electronic music.
Greeted with enthusiastic reviews from press and DJs, Smooth Sailing and the b-side Bubblebomb are appearing in DJ charts (Remute aka Denis Karimani, Jeff Milligan) and radio playlists (Supernova, Electrhouse.fr, Stop Modernism) across a broad spectrum of genres.
Corner is part of a new generation of record labels drawing lessons from other music genres in building artist fanbases. Shaka and label partner Breandan Davey aim to shift the focus of the electronic music culture back to the artists that create lasting music that resonates with fans, and to break the mold of label centric marketing which they see as a factor in the increasing disposibility of electronic music. A tall order, for sure, but for now it’s all sails to the wind and clear skys ahead.

of luomo or swayzak, well done.

this ep is a boooomb! tech-funk of the highest order! loving every single cut on this release. its got
everything i need, the funk, quirk, vox, and hell of a lot of wiggle. shaka’s originals are killer funked
up tracks, and breandan davey’s remix is extremely tight and crisp. will play all the tracks on here to
death.
xpansul (leftroom, plus8...)

The debut release from Switzerland’s Corner Records features 3 tracks (Smooth Sailing original, remix, and Bubblebomb). Bubblebomb is a refreshing mix of electro and bass-driven house; perfect for a beach party in Ibiza or a VIP soiree in New York City. There’s no doubt Corner Records will make a splash in 2008, and these tracks are a clear inclination of what to expect. Check them out at www.cornerrecords.com
