The documentary-film project 8 Billion Lives turns its lens on Diplo for its new installment. The Swedish filmmaker Wing-Yee captures a day in the DJ’s life in the 10-minute short, putting an unusual spin on the typical tour doc. Shot in black and white, it’s an intentionally understated snapshot of the DJ in action, focusing less on the limelight than on the downtime—the hotel, the taxi, the airport. Diplo’s own voiceover gives the narration a low-key, conversational style; it’s hard to imagine a more candid portrait of an artist who’s better known for Mad Decent’s madcap antics.
