999Pebbles / Somelightuntothenight
Dima / Cassy [Beatstreet]
8 April, 2008 | 2.45PM- Section: Music Reviews
This release is twisted after-hours funk from Berlin’s party specialists.
Beatstreet is one of Berlin’s best parties.
Taking place at random venues and on random special occasions, it’s not the easiest party to find out about — unless, of course, you’re already plugged into the Berlin rave scene somehow.
But in the last few years, they’ve developed a reputation for gathering together some of the most cutting edge producers and DJs to deliver some of the most talked about epic Sunday parties of the last few years in the world’s current capital city of techno.
In 2007, the promoters decided to branch out into running a label.
With the talent and connections of Cassy and Troy Pierce on hand to contribute, it’s no surprise that their releases are worth taking notice of.
This release features a new track ‘999Pebbles’ by Dima.
It’s bouncy minimal house/techno with surging tones and lashings of funk.
Our pick is the second track, on which the label invites Minus favourite Troy Pierce to reinterpret Cassy’s deep and mournful ‘Somelightuntothenight’.
Where the original is a dreamy, moody piece of vocal house, Pierce’s mix is all snarls and rasping percussion, soaking the original piano riff in filters and effects to create a typically jumpy piece of Detroit meets Berlin darkness.
