8 essential WMC DJ panels and workshops

Remix Magazine are our partners in WMC, and whilst our flamboyant pool parties with some of the world’s best DJs takes place outside in the Miami sun, serious debates, panels and master classes happen inside the hotel.

It’s like the yin and yang of the dance music industry all in one location: education, technology discussions and chin stroking taking place inside; and hands-in-the-air, cocktails and sexy cutting-edge dance music poolside.

This year Remix have pulled out all the stops to secure some credible guest speakers and high profile DJ technology demonstrations, and we’ve decided to highlight the panels/demos that we think DJs would be most interested in.

THURSDAY, MARCH 26

Here’s our Top 8 panels:

Check out Stanton’s DaScratch

2 p.m. SC System 3 DaScratch Controller Demo (Cabana 1406)

Stanton will be showing off their new SC system 3 DaScratch Controller, a much-hyped powerful portable DJ controller that combines fast response, easy customization, and a compact form to create an ideal instrument for any digital DJ looking for total control over their software. Ooooh, sounds sexy.

6 p.m. Mark Flash (UR) Numark NS7 Showcase (Oval Ballroom)

One of the highlights of Remix Hotel will be the Underground Resistance demonstrations. Three of the legendary Detroit techno crew are in the house showing off brand new bits of kit, and Mark Flash’s demonstrating of the all-new Numark NS7 Serato Itch controller is bound to be an eye opener. As well as demo’ing the features, Flash will reportedly throw down a live DJ set using the controller. Sounds like the best lecture, ever.

7:30 p.m. DubSpot Presents Ableton Live 8 (Oval Ballroom)

Three one-hour Ableton Live 8 classes are due to take place at Remix Hotel, each promising a textbook’s worth of tips and tutorials about how to utilise the new features in version 8 of the software. Jon Margulies, producer and author of Ableton Live 7 Power!, will wax lyrical about Live’s new instrument Collision, give tips on workflow improvements, discuss uses of the new Groove engine, and share his knowledge on warping. This is a must-attend class for bedroom DJs and aspiring producers looking to delve deep into Ableton.

FRIDAY, MARCH 27

Fall in love with Lemur

3 p.m. Raw Hedroom Lemur Master Class (Oval Ballroom)

Deadmau5 thinks JazzMutant’s Lemur is brilliant for live performances as its multi-touch screen allows precise manipulation of audio in a highly visual way. Techno producer Raw Headroom from Trapez will be giving a masterclass of the Lemur, as will Richard Devine at Remix Hotel. And to demonstrate just how powerful this little box of tricks can be on stage, both Stephan Bodzin and Raw Headroom will Lemur it up on the Beatport stage on Sunday (12pm - 2pm).

2 p.m. EXCLUSIVE Tosca Q&A (Martini Room)
Austrian twosome Tosca, aka Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber, will be answering questions from the audience and journalists alike. Expect the session to be intelligent, enlightening and insightful, just like their blissful music.

6:30 p.m. Andy Caldwell Q&A Session (Martini Room)
LA-based house hero Andy Caldwell will be answering questions from fans and attendees. Expect lots of girls to swoon over the pretty boy as he talks about house music and his thoughts on the scene and production.

SATURDAY, MARCH 28

Learn from Underground Resistance

6 p.m. Atlantis (UR) Numark NuVJ & ArKaos GrandVJ Demo (Oval Ballroom)

Atlantis from Underground Resistance will demo Numark’s NuVJ controller and its corresponding GrandVJ software, and show how he uses it to bend film clips, photos and digital videos to aid musical performances. Atlantis has used the NuVJ for a number of Model 500 performances and with VJing becoming more and more important to the DJ booth, it’s worth attending to see where visuals might go next.

12 p.m. - 6 p.m. SAE Presents Remixing & Production With Vincent di Pasquale
Music production school SAE will give classes featuring Apple Logic Studio & Euphonix Artist Series Controllers from 12pm - 6pm, covering loads of topics including vocal production, beat production, bass lines and mixing with subgroups and stems.
