2008 according to…Move D
17 December, 2008 | 10.00AMThe irrefutable king of the deep house revival this year was David Moufang, aka Move D
.
As a producer Move D has been steadily releasing records since the early nineties, but in 2008 the sonic niche that he has been carefully cultivating mutated into the ‘sound of now’ - he’s our deep house artist of the year.
“It’s all about the timing, “ confirmed Move D. “You do your thing and eventually this will fall in synchronicity with what’s happening in the scene and what people are into musically.”

Move D emerged to be the antithesis of the identikit formula that plagued much of the deep house scene this year where producers, eager to appear ‘current’, turned to tired African percussion, samey chord progressions and ‘soulful’ vocal stabs.
The discography kicked off for D in 2008 with the release of ‘Quit Quittin’ for the nascent Uzuri Recordings
: an EP brimming with jazzy flourishes, balmy synths and vibey percussion.
Releases for Workshop, Modern Love and Smallville followed, before the cornerstone release of Move D’s year dropped in May.
‘Songs From the Beehive’, D’s LP collaboration with Benjamin Brunn
, was a deep listening experience that reeked of talent.
The album was a kaleidoscope of sounds and textures that was recorded mainly as live improv sessions between the pair.
Move D went on to put out remixes for Four:Twenty and Simple
and an EP for Gerd Janson’s Running Back
label, a work which he feels played an important part in his enduring success.
“I guess a constant stream of releases on the right few labels definitely helped,” reflected Moufang. “Also, I was lucky to get a lot of friendly press and lovely support from individuals!”
Move D toured fairly extensively during the year - either as a live act or as a DJ - a fact that is reflected in his assessment of the scene at the end of 2008. “I’ve seen a lot of very nice parties such as Sunday Best, Freerotation 2008, Süd Electronic, K4 and Meandyou,” he said.
So how would Move D sum up the year his career went stratospheric?
“Personally I will remember 2008 as a great year and I think it was a good year for the underground deep house movement in general. I am very happy to see that there are 20 year-olds digging house parties and my music as well!”
Move D’s Top 3 Records of 2008

1. Fred P. ‘No Looking Back EP’ [Soul People Music] [vinyl]
Get Fred P. ‘No Looking Back EP’ at clone.nl.
This is probably the least known of my top three - but the fact that’s not a reason not to promote this artist here - serious and deep house music with a strong musical identity.
Fred P. has really inspired me and reassured my belief in electronic music. You should also look out for his other releases on soul people music and on underground quality.

2. Benjamin Brunn, Rising Sun, Da Halz ‘Workshop 05’ [Workshop]
Get Benjamin Brunn, Rising Sun, Da Halz - ‘Workshop 05’ on Beatport.com
The label run by my all time favourite Jens Kuhn aka Lowtec is not a secret any more - this release however was maybe a little overlooked.
Three beautiful tracks, however to me, Benjamin Brunn really stands out with his very own interpretation of intelligent techno meets deep house.
Benjamin has had a very strong set of releases besides the stuff we did together on Binemusic and Smallville.
Also expect a 12” by him and Even Tuell on Uzuri Records, coming out early next year.

3. Jus-Ed vs Anton Zap ‘Real House Music’ [Underground Quality] [vinyl]
Get Jus-Ed vs Anton Zap ‘Real House Music’ at Hardwax.com
I guess no explanation needed here - Jus-Ed really had an international break as a DJ, producer and label owner.
Here he teams up with the always reliable Anton Zap, whose track ‘On The Road’ to me was one of the best and most dancefloor appealing tracks in 2008.
Be sure to check out his other stuff on UQ, Deep Explorer and Quintessentials.
