2008 according to…Aeroplane
10 December, 2008 | 9.00AMThe kitsch, pop sensibilities of Belgium DJ duo Aeroplane
perfectly summed up the sunnier breeze that blew threw electronic music during 2008. Aeroplane are our top nu disco artists of 2008.
Since their 2007 launchpad single ‘Aeroplane/Caramellas’, Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca have deservedly become the name to drop in the ‘nu disco’ scene, commanding a level of interest on a par with contemporaries Lindström and Prins Thomas.
“2008 was a lot of work for us,” they explained. “We did 10, or maybe 11 remixes.”
As mentioned, the boys amassed an impressive catalogue of re-rubs during 2008, that at a glance, included such luminaries as MGMT, Lindström, Cut Copy, Bloc Party and Grace Jones.
Naturally, demand for their creamy disco/house/pop DJ sets dovetailed their impressive productions, as they explained:
“We DJ’d around the world. We met really cool people and contacts! Which means that 2009 will be more full than 2008! But we are of course happy about that.”
As anyone who experienced an Aeroplane record this year will testify, the pair have developed a knack of releasing seemingly timeless music that you can’t help but ask yourself, “Haven’t I heard this before?”
As the year progressed and the duo gigged hard, they eventually found another avenue down which to express their musical creativity.
“We completely fell into analog gear, synths and drum machines, that we can now slowly buy with the bookings,” they said.
When we asked Aeroplane to touch on why they think they enjoyed the success they did this year, they almost seem humbly stumped.
“We don’t know! We’re just really happy and proud to get all this feedback from artists we are fans of. But to explain why...?”
Looking ahead to 2009, the interest in a full length Aeroplane artist album could not be greater - which is just as well, as the boys plan to release their debut LP sometime around March.
So in closing, how would they sum up their breakthrough year?
“2008 is for us, we hope, the beginning of something cool - we just have to keep working.”
Aeroplane’s Top 3 Records of 2008
1. MGMT ‘Electric Feel’

We think this is the most exciting record made in 2008 - ‘60s/’70s psychedelic feeling with a 2008 futuristic groove. The remix we did of the track was not approved by them, but a lot of people loved it, and the internet and the blogs really helped us by promoting it.
Because of this remix we get a lot of interest.
2. Eine Kleine Nacht Musik ‘La Serenissima’

We loved the original by Rondo Veneziano. Henry (Riton) put a killer bassline to it and turned it into a melancholic/dancefloor hit.
We’re playing it everywhere, every time - it’s really the kind of record that when you hear it you think, “Shit, I should have done this,” but Riton did it perfectly.
3. Sebastien Tellier ‘Sexuality’

Beautiful melodies, real ‘80s drum machines and the sexiest French guy of the moment.
The production is simple but nearly perfect. Can’t get enough of it. We did a remix of ‘Kilometer’ that’s gonna be released soon—expect some 1984 hi-NRG disco.
