2007: A year of electronic music news

The year has flown by and after 12 months of dancefloor action, memories have melded into one mushy picture.

So we decided to take a look back at the last year of electronic music news and recap all the major news stories that rocked our scene.

It’s been one hell of a ride. See you in the new year.

PS: Beatportal only launched in March so actually it’s not quite a year, we lied.

March

A new survey by DTC predicts that DJs will soon be replaced by VJs.

Miami’s Winter Music Conference gets underway with four days of Beatport pool parties. Industry Boy documents it all in his blog. Oh dear.

Trendsetter Fabric in London starts hosting dubstep DJs and artists on a Saturday night. Some predict dub will replace minimal in 2007.

Native Instruments launch Traktor Scratch, a digital DJ system said to be the most advanced of its kind.

Burglars strike at BT’s studio, stealing $150,000 worth of equipment.

April

Pacha NYC is closed after a police raid, but reopens triumphantly a few days later.

Gui Boratto drops his stunning debut LP, ‘Chromophobia’ on Kompakt. His ‘Beautiful Life’ track becomes an instant anthem:


London’s underground techno institution T Bar closes for a few weeks to improve security measures, after police catch drug dealers operating inside.

Deadmau5’s remix of Burufunk Vs. Carbon Community ‘Community Funk’ reaches No.1 on Beatport:


May

Berlin’s famous techno haven Tresor reopens.

Guy Gerber’s ‘Belly Dancing’ on Cocoon becomes an early Ibiza anthem with its memorable Middle Eastern melody:


The first reports of Pacemaker, the pocket-sized DJ system are announced, with much hype surrounding it in the DJ and technology worlds.

Dubfire from Deep Dish launches his own label SCI + TEC Digital Audio. The label’s first release ‘Roadkill’ becomes a major club hit around the world:

Dirty South release the massive radio-friendly electro house track ‘Better Day’ on Vicious Grooves, Pete Tong names it his ‘Essential New Tune’:

Sebo K & Metro’s massive minimal techno hit ‘Transit’ finally sees the light of day on Get Physical:


June

Ibiza’s opening parties take place. Industry Boy documents the weekend’s carnage, including Luciano’s outstanding set at the DC10 opening.

DC10, Amnesia and Bora Bora in Ibiza are shut down by police over drug and security allegations, just as the clubbing season begins.

Matthew Dear drops his new LP ‘Asa Breed’ to critical acclaim.

Britain’s Local Government Association issues a five-point plan to tackle illegal raves.

Robert Babicz makes ears twinkle with his solid techno album ‘A Cheerful Temper’.

Britain’s most famous trance club Gatecrasher burns to the ground.

After a couple of weeks of anxiety, DC10 in Ibiza reopens.

Pryda aka Eric Prydz gets dancefloors moving with his electro prog two-tracker ‘RYMD/Armed’:


A festival riot in Greece leaves Underworld man hospitalized.

July

Konrad Black’s remix of Snax ‘Honeymoon’s Over’ tears up clubs with its infectious vocal and tight minimal production:


A DJ Tiësto club scandal in the Middle East breaks out, involving a riot, a no show DJ and a promoter arrested at the border after being caught fleeing with a suitcase of money.

Some of Ibiza’s beaches get shut after an oil spill.

Tiefschwarz celebrate 10 years of electro chaos with a compilation

Global Gathering festival in Britain takes place, but quickly becomes a mud bath.

August

Sasha announces the launch of his own record label EmFire.

Samim releases his accordion-sampling tech house track ‘Heater’ on Get Physical and it becomes an instant hit in Ibiza. Immediately the track is the topic of a love/hate debate, with electronic music fans on both sides of the fence:


Beatport launches a beta version of Beatport Downloader, a desktop app that makes downloading and organizing your music collection much more simple.

September

San Francisco’s LoveFest sees tens of thousands of dance fans party in the streets.

Beatportal kicks off a massive Carl Cox remix contest with CR2 Records.



October

Samim’s ‘Heater’ gets snapped up by Ministry of Sound, gets a video and airplay on daytime radio, and goes mainstream.

Amsterdam Dance Event takes place, and Beatportal sends Industry Boy along to document the whole caboodle.

London club Fabric launches its own podcast series.

The results of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs poll are marred by ‘voting irregularities’. Christopher Lawrence and DJ Dan, plus a number of other alleged ‘cheaters’ are kicked out of the list.

November

The clubbing community mourns the deaths of four clubbers who were shot dead on the dancefloor during a Carl Cox gig in Venezuela.

Rumours circulate London’s club scene that the owners behind Fabric plan to open a massive superclub in The 02 (formerly the Millennium Dome).

The winners of Beatportal’s Carl Cox remix contest are announced - Aspin & Dipace, Jewel Kid, The Ascent, Suave Hidalgo and Andy Slate get first place in their respective genre fields.

One of dance music’s biggest vinyl and CD distributors, Amato Distribution, goes bust. Record labels lose thousands of pounds.

Drum & bass legend Grooverider gets arrested in Dubai for cannabis and hardcore porn.

December

With Amato Distribution gone, record labels report huge losses and 3 Beat Records forced to close label management wing and digital site.

Japan’s dance music specialists Cisco Records close all of their six existing stores. Another loss for vinyl lovers.

The ‘Godfather of Disco’ Mel Cheren passes away on Friday December 7th.

Earlier in the month Karlheinz Stockhausen, a pioneer of early electronic music dies at the age of 80.

Fat! Records’ Paul Arnold, the man responsible for the longest running breakbeat night in the world – Chew The Fat! – is diagnosed with Leukemia.

Billboard announces that DJ Tiësto and house music were the highlights of dance music in 2007. The magazine gets suitably slated on the blogosphere and on forums.
