20 @%&ing Years of Planet E

Looking for a way to feel old? Well, if you consider yourself a longtime follower of Carl Craig [a]‘s Planet E label, try this on for size: this spring, Planet E Communications [l] celebrates 20 years, an anniversary summed up by the wryly weary title of their new compilation, Twenty F@%&ing Years of Planet E.

The album, out today, collects 25 crucial tracks from the label’s history, including a number of rare and out-of-print gems like Moodymann’s “Dem Young Sconies,” Urban Tribe’s “Covert Action” and Flexitone’s electro classic, “Pulse of Revolution.” In addition to Detroit (and Chicago) classics from the likes of Paperclip People [a], 69 [a], Ican [a], Niko Marks, Kenny Larkin [a], and Gemini, equal weight is given to the international side of Planet E’s roster, including Attias [a], Martin Buttrich [a], Lazy Fat People [a], and early contributor Balil [a] (aka the Black Dog’s Ed Handley).

The compilation is just part of the label’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Throughout the year, Planet E will also be dusting off back-catalog classics and presenting them alongside brand new remixes from the label’s friends and family. First up, in April, will be Recloose’s great “Can’t Take It” featuring Dwele, remixed by Luciano and Milton Jackson. In April, Kirk Degiorgio will tackle Buttrich’s “Full Clip,” and other remixes from Ricardo Villalobos, Dubfire, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Francois K, Mad Mike Banks, Dennis Ferrer, and others will follow in the coming months.

Finally, Craig and company will be bringing Planet E anniversary gigs to clubs around the world all year long. On Saturday, March 5, they’ll take over two rooms of London’s Ewer St. Warehouse for an all-night party featuring Craig, Francois K, Radio Slave, Paul Woolford, and Psycatron live, with support from Chris Stanford, Rufus, and Deporto. Check out Planet E’s Resident Advisor events page for more info on that gig and other parties (including a tantalizing Carl Craig/Luciano all-night B2B at Dublin’s Tripod on March 16).
