The Sarcastic Guide to Electronic Music

I can’t tell you how long I have been searching for an audio-encyclopedia of electronica genres.

Imagine Wikipedia with terms linked not just to related pages but also to audiofiles.  That would be bitchin’!

Maybe the result would work something like this interactive guide at Techno.org, created by Ishkur.

Ishkur (Kenneth John Taylor according to ... Wikipedia!) has assembled an impressive library of audio-definitions to go with his detailed commentary on each subgenre/sub-subgenre/micro-nanogenre, and so on.  I imagine that some of his smart-ass opinions have raised eyebrows, but damn, he’s funny.

Hyperdub returns with Ikonika’s ‘Please’

After blowing out the back end of ‘07 with the release of Burial’s massive ‘Untrue’ LP, Hyperdubhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_l.gif are back in action, kicking off their ‘08 schedule with the debut single from Ikonikahttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif.

An up-and-coming producer based out of the UK, Ikonika approaches the tried and true dubstep template from a fresh perspective, marrying bleeping synth patterns and crisp half-step beats in order to create tracks that fall somewhere between Kode9 and Aphex Twin, with a bit of Skream’s knack for melody thrown in for good measure.

Featured on label boss Kode9’s Sonar preview mix last summer, ‘Please’ occupies the singles a-side.

RA: Luciano interview

There’s a great interview with Swiss-Chilean superstar Lucianohttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif on ResidentAdvisor.net.

In it, he talks about how he recently located to a small quiet town in Switzerland.

“The main reason was my two kids. Berlin was too hardcore for my family.

“I was always playing out and it was often just nonstop partying.

“You would come back from DJing and there would be five friends at home having an afterparty.

“A never-ending thing, basically. So I needed to find a balance between the party-filled weekends and the days after.”
