Love Hangover (DJ Spen)

Joey Negro [Z Records]

Keeping disco firmly in fashion, Joey Negro produces a proper cover of Diana Ross’s ‘Love Hangover’ for 2008 on his own Z Records label.

The vocal performance is by Diane Charlemagne (think “Inspired” with Satoshi Tomiie).

Pete Tong’s ‘Tong Factor’ and Top 10 DJ chart

As Britain’s long serving ambassador to dance music, Pete Tong has helped the careers of countless DJs and artists by breaking them on his influential BBC Radio 1 show, the Essential Selection.

Now Pete Tong is taking his role as a tastemaker more seriously than ever - during his upcoming North American tour, the DJ will host his very own Simon Cowell-inspired talent search called the ‘Tong Factor’.

Over the course of his two week tour (October 21st - November 1st) Mr. Tong is asking aspiring North American producers to hand him demos on CDs or USB sticks at his club gigs.

“It’s a hands on talent search,” Pete Tong told Beatportal. “I always get given lots of music when I tour USA and Canada so I thought this time we would make it more official.”

The Crystal Method celebrates tour with free download

Long time veterans of the electronic music scene, The Crystal Method have been hard at work for over a decade and are still going strong, about to release a fourth studio album due out early next year, as well as launching a 30-date North American tour.

Back in 1994 they released their first single, ‘Now is the Time’, which was originally a popular slogan for the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Now, decades later, we’re seeing a resurgence of that same sentiment in the campaign of presidential nominee Barack Obama, echoed visually in the wildly popular political artwork of Shepard Fairey.

Just in time for the November 2008 U.S. presidential election, the Crystal Method have reworked the song with a sample from Obama’s “Now is the time…” statement from his speech, and have made it available as a free download on their site.

You can also see a corresponding, revised version of Fairey’s Obama portrait logo there.

Click through for further tour details and a quote from the Method boys about the track.

Crazy P (or Crazy Penis as they were once known) have been gracing our stereos for almost ten years now, with their infectious vocal house and soul.

This week sees their new album, ‘Stop, Space, Return’ drop on 20:20 Vision, so Beatportal took the opportunity to ask the guys a few questions.

Beautiful Strange (John Digweed and Nick Muir's Even Stranger Remix)

Nick Muir and John Digweed [Bedrock...

Something quite bizarre is happening with modern dance music. It seems the days of uplifting breakdowns and dancing with a blissful smile on your face are fading away, replaced by something much more terrifying.

Even the folks at Bedrock Records seem to be taking a turn into the darkest depths of sonic wizardry, and this remix from label head honcho, John Digweed (w/ Nick Muir as Bedrock), is a glimpse into dance music’s darkest realms.

Feature interview: Dinky’s time is now

Having just released her highly acclaimed album ‘May Be Later’ (listen to it in the player below), we felt it was high time to gather a snapshot of where Dinky is in 2008.

Beatportal’s Lee Smith traveled to the Berlin producer’s studio to gather her thoughts on her musical influences, the American government and the Chilean techno community.

Weekend Weapons…Dixon

Weekend Weapons is a new weekly feature in which we shamelessly beg the top tier of the world’s DJ’ing elite to reveal their top 3 tracks from their weekend.

Widely considered to be among the most talented and influential DJs to recently emerge, we felt it fitting to ask Innervisions taste-maker Dixon to kick things off with his deadly trio.

His gigs last weekend saw him hit Tape in Berlin as part of the Popkomm event, travel to Portugal to play Lux in Lisbon and round off the weekend in Spain with a set at Fabrik in Madrid.

Here’s Dixon’s Top 3 Weekend Weapons, in his own words.

Tutorial: How to use reverb

Now that we’ve tackled the essentials of compression and delay, we’ll dig a bit deeper into another indispensable producer’s tool: reverberation.

Reverberation – or “reverb”, for short – is an effect that emulates the actual acoustic properties of a given space, either real or imagined.

I’d even venture a guess that many - if not all - of your favorite tracks would sound quite different if the reverb was removed from their mixes.

So with that in mind, we’re going to take a closer look at the specifics.

Don’t Know Why

Bimbo Jones [Tommy boy]

Before you write off Bimbo Jones as just another commercial act (their Eurythmics-esque first single ‘And I Try’ was the No. 1 club track in the country last week, according to Billboard), consider this: Bimbo vocalist Katherine Ellis has flexed her impressive pipes for everyone from Meat Katie, to Superchumbo, to Mark Knight.

She sounds like Moloko’s ravishingly quirky Roisin Murphy one minute, and the grand dame herself, Annie Lennox, the next.

Next to Jennifer Hudson, she might be the biggest and most exciting voice to release music this fall.
