Last Tango in DC10 including the we love remix comp winning remix
After the sun set over the gathered faithful of hedonistic revellers at the infamous DC10 for the last time, there would be few who wouldn’t look back with huge pleasure and not draw inspiration from the many sunkissed, debauched times spent there.
Cue ‘The Dirty Tourists’, who come smashing through with a killer track, entirely inspired by their very own memories and lack of them from this hallowed venue.
A deep down low groover, delivering a throbing bottom end, is perfectly countered by the airy and uplifting strings, sampled from legendary 19th century composser Felix Mendelssohn of ‘The Wedding March’ fame.
With acres of drive but with the self control of a saint, this is a true track for the underground and with remixes already canned and awaiting deployment from techno Firecracker ’Kolombo
‘ and the un-discoverd underground genius ‘Midnite Radio’, This is going to be a granite release of the highest order.
Also on the bill will be So Deaf, and the winner of the ‘We Love’ remix contest, Sintetic who gets a full release along side the rest......
KEEP IT LOW. :-)

DJ Dan Interview with ClubDistrict
DJ Dan has been on the cutting edge of forward thinking dance tracks for over 18 years. As one of the pioneers of the west coast explosion throughout the 90s to the present day wave of electro and indie dance, DJ Dan continues to push the envelope as he brings to you his long awaited debut artist album entitled Future Retro.
To celebrate Dan’s 20th anniversary in music, he decided to create something special, one vantage point looking back and paying homage to where we have come, and another looking to the future of where we are going. Based in 2 parts “Future” and “Retro”, its a culmination of all things great on the dance floor, fusing classic dance tracks with Dan’s unique blend of funky driving electro; A musical journey that spans the infamous past, present, and looks to the future of electronic music, from Mr. Fingers to Phuture to Frankie Knuckles to Midnight Star...Chicago to Detroit to San Francisco to New York City and back again.

UNMIXED with DJ DAN!
CD: Dan you are considered a true legend in the house and rave scene. What is the most notable contribution you feel you made to the house and rave scene that lives on today?
DJDAN: Overall I’d say my biggest contribution has been pushing the boundaries of house music. I’ve always had a love for many different types of music growing up and wanted to share that with the crowd by throwing in elements of jazz, funk and disco into my sets. This keeps the music fun, interesting and exciting for myself and the crowd and I feel that through this open minded philosophy, it has given me my edge through the years.
CD: Rewinding back to the early 90s, your popularity in the Los Angeles underground was at an all time high, but in 1993 you surprised fans by moving up to San Francisco, why the move?
DJDAN: The rave scene in LA in 91/92 had become massive in a very short time and unfortunately had become very commercial as well. It had really become an ugly and dangerous place in many ways. I had been playing a lot in San Francisco at this time and had discovered a new way of looking at life and my music which really connected with the San Francisco crowd. I tried playing the same sound in LA and it just wasn’t connecting at all. I realized that I needed a change of environment and moved to SF and formed Funky Tekno Tribe with my 2 great friends Hector and Kevon. It was truly an unforgettable and electric time in my life.
CD: Throughout the 90’s you were both influential and instrumental in creating new genre crossing blends, with electronic music still in its infancy in America, how did you manage to pull off a platinum record in 1999?
DJDAN: A band called Orgy had done a rock version of New Order’s Blue Monday and since this was my favorite song of all time, I knew I had to do a remix of it. the only part I used from Orgy was their vocal and then basically re-did the parts of Blue Monday and turned it back into a current version of the dance classic. This was right after Needle Damage so they had a few similarities which I think many people liked.
CD: During the beginning stages of the electronic music movement was when the genres earliest legends were born; is there still room today for a legend to emerge? Who will those new legends be?
DJDAN: Yes, there will be but I think it will definitely continue to be those that produce and dj. Dj’s used to tell their story through their sets by playing other people’s works ONLY but now they can do it through their original works, visuals, mashups, etc. It’s going to be those that have a vision of the future and are not afraid of taking risks. People want to be inspired and to be taken to the next level.
CD: Besides being called Festivals now, the rave scene then and today, what’s the difference?
DJDAN: Sometimes I don’t know the difference myself apart from the fact that when it’s called a “festival” the promoters have proper permits in place and the police are actually involved and making sure everything runs smoothly.
CD: Your remix discography includes some of the biggest names in music including Depeche Mode, Ferry Corsten, New Order, Lady Gaga, Janet Jackson, Pussy Cat Dolls, Tiesto, and P. Diddy to name a few; what’s in store for 2010?
DJDAN: This year I am releasing my original artist album entitled “Future Retro” which encompasses many of the styles and sounds that inspired me growing up. There are many covers on the record which many will know as well as new material that I think people will really be hyped on. This year I am focusing on establishing myself as a producer as much as I have a dj in the past. It’s all part of me getting all the ideas in my head out onto the dancefloor and I am really inspired to produce right now.
CD: How do you approach creating music, what is the method to your madness or is it a proprietary secret?
DJDAN: I usually just go with my first instinct. You always have to start somewhere. For me, that is always about sampling a great beat or kick drum. From there I start building up different sounds, like a sketchpad. Once it gets to about 10-20 tracks, I just keep what works and then I roll out the track in that direction. Sometimes it feels like trial and error but it’s always a fun process.
CD: Tell us about your current projects making industry news; Evolution 1, Future Retro and your current tour?
DJDAN: The Evolution series are releases off the forthcoming album Future Retro. All of these releases have the album version as well as remixes. There will be 3 of these releases before the release of the album this summer. I will be kicking off the tour in March/April and will be having some of my favorite dj’s playing with me on these dates.
CD: It was an epic moment to see you and Donald Glaude perform together, how did the idea of a 2x4 with Donald Glaude culminate?
DJDAN: Donald and I have been friends since High School and have always connected with the music in the same way. We did it once in 1993 and it was an epic experience so we thought we would bring it back as a tour in 2007. It was a truly magical experience.

Markus Schulz ClubDistrict Interview
Over the last 10 years Markus Schulz has fused the individual musical identities of progressive house & trance into his own creative, inimitable hybrid sound. Through the unique alignment of his headline DJ sets, Coldharbour label output and highly prominent Global DJ Broadcast show, he orchestrated a sea change revolution in the US trance scene - one that has gone on to have its sound influence sweep to the farthest reaches of the globe. This success has been singularly reflected in weekly headliner sets in front of many tens of thousands, a GDJB radio show listenership up in the tens of millions & one Beatport chart-topping release after another. Following several highly ranked positions in 2008 Shultz punched his way into the Top 10 of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 chart, landing at no.8. In repeating the exact same achievement in 2009, he now stands, quite unequivocally, as America’s no.1 club DJ.

UNMIXED with Markus Schulz!
CD: Born in Germany, you came to the U.S. at age 13; what prompted the move?
Markus: I moved to the U.S. with my family who were in the Army at the time. Miami is an amazing city with an amazing vibe. I love the ocean and the warm weather (though not quite so much over the last two weeks!) – I’m always on the road, so for me to be able to come home to Miami… it’s far more welcoming.
CD: Prior to choosing your life’s work, you had a love affair with the break-dancing scene, what made you chose living a life behind the decks versus the ‘dance’ floor?
Markus: Actually that came about over the course of one night; me and the crew I was break-dancing with started throwing parties. Our first party came up, we had all been practicing and we were each supposed to spin for an hour. I kicked off and when it came time for me to get off and the next guy to come on, they all disappeared! I wound up spinning the entire night and the DJ in me was born.
CD: I don’t want to get you in trouble here, but you have played at some of the biggest events in the world including Electric Daisy Carnival, Love Parade, Global Gathering, Ultra Music Festival, and many more, which one is your favorite to perform at?
Markus: You know, anyone who gets asked this same question would be hard-pressed to pick just one! I don’t know that I can. Every festival seems like a living creature, with a pulse and vibe all its own. Playing these events is like the peak of some of my tours. You just feel the energy as you step on stage and all you want to do is get on the decks and be a part of it.
Markus SchulzCD: You produce progressive trance tracks, how do you personally feel about other genres like hard house, electro or techno?
Markus: Last year, through my “Dakota” project I indulged, to a pretty fair degree, into the techno and electro half of my brain… I’ve long loved and followed music in those two genres. While I definitely wouldn’t go as far as to say I play ‘hard house’, those that either tune into my Global DJ Broadcast or come to the gigs will probably recognize that I do like to introduce some harder sounding elements over the course of my sets. Progressive & trance though is the base for what I do.
CD: In the past you said that trance is going through a period of reinvention, you seem to have your fingers on the pulse of change, has trance hit a ceiling?
Markus: Trance is always reinventing itself to a “lesser of a greater” degree. What I meant by this is that it was starting to work its way towards the top of the curve again. At the start of a new year you do tend to look back at the previous 12 and evaluate how you felt it stacked up in terms of the gigs, the music and the general pulse of the scene. 2008 was very strong, 2009 though was an exceptional one. Those vibes naturally makes you feel very positive at the start of a new year!
CD: In 2009 you released tracks under the moniker Dakota. What’s the meaning behind the name; why is it important to differentiate a different style under a different name?
Markus: When I started on this project, I just wanted to make some darker tunes for my DJ sets last summer. As the production progressed, I realized that this was much deeper than my usual material and I did not want the fans to get confused and think I was changing my style. So, I decided that putting it out under the “Dakota” name (the name I used earlier in the millennium) was a better idea.
CD: Your latest album, ‘Thoughts Become Things’ has a very philosophical title; I think it’s appropriate considering the trance sound is very thought invoking. What was the thought behind this album?
Markus: I am inspired by so many things when I travel that when I get home my first impulse is to get in the studio and create music. I had all these tracks that I had worked on but they just weren’t quite Coldharbour (Markus’ label). I wanted to get them out there because I felt they deserved to be heard. I hadn’t done anything under the Dakota alias in a long time and I thought these tracks really fit that style. So it was time to bring Dakota back. I think it was the right project at the right time. I am looking forward to getting back to the Dakota feeling soon and creating more.
CD: Congrats on being voted #8 DJ in the 2009 Top 100 DJ Poll and the continued success of your Global DJ Broadcast (GDJB) show on DI.fm and Sirius XM Radio. Do the polls help you as a DJ?
Markus: Thanks! When you start out you don’t really think too much about these things – they just happen. It is very nice though that what I do throughout each working year is reflected in some way. The polls do help DJs, I guess in the same way as say pop charts help mainstream artists. They give you at least an indication of how the many different things you do throughout the year are being perceived by the public. That is a very useful thing for anyone, regardless of what you do in life!
CD: You recently tweeted about an ‘unexpected and insane party in Haifa’. What was that event like, how’s the scene in Israel?
Markus: I had never played in Haifa before and really wasn’t sure what to expect. The crowd was really into the night and we all had such a great time. They didn’t stop dancing until the last track was played. I’m really looking forward to going there again. It was such a fantastic night.
