Omid 16B interview: new album
2 November, 2007 | 7.29AMOmid 16B‘s new album ‘Like 3 Ears & 1 Eye’ is due out soon on SexOnWax Recordings, and in a revealing interview Omid 16B
explained that his third artist album could have been released two years ago had a flood not ruined his studio and all his tracks.
How personal did this album get?
“I lost 500 gigs worth of samples and songs when I had a flood in my studio two years ago and I’d almost finished what would have been this album, but it turned into a nightmare trying to put it back together.
“So I started all over again and moved to a new place in Putney, built a studio and finished it in a year after that.
“It was like hell making it before the flood so I guess the flood and loss of my hard-drive only gave me more passion to make this through with a little patience.”
Can you throw some light on the album title?
“Initially the title would suggest a new possibility of some sort physically, but it has many meanings and they all focus on the changing of one’s mind regarding ourselves and the effects we have on this world through our thoughts.
“It would also suggest that our thoughts may bring more evolved and interesting results both physically and spiritually.”
So, the power of thought is something that intrigues you?
“Everything you see is the result of thoughts, and you and I have a choice in which way we think, so I guess it’s pretty much everything.
“Nothing is really permanent except what we don’t really understand, and our thoughts are too involved in finding out things that are unexplainable instead of creating new ways of understanding.”
Can you (and should you) transcend the ego in the music making process?
“Only if you need motivation and guidance in certain studio sessions.
“The ego is your best friend to a degree, but not complete, so I guess you just gotta look out for him/her too, but not let him/her take over.
“If you completely ignore him/her he/she can turn on you.”
Why is it important for you to do things differently (with this album)?
“It’s not. You pointing this out makes me think I am, but I’m not trying to purposely do anything differently.
“All it stands for is I don’t want to stop trying new ideas and new solutions to everyday things.
“Music is a part of all of us and we all add to what’s made and what’s heard so I’d rather evolve with new ideas than stay in tradition because it’s a safer place to be.
“Let’s not cause any problems with this, and uplift a few spirits instead.
“But I guess whatever the universe wants is what the universe gets. I don’t care for being different I’d actually prefer if we could all merge.”
Any other things you’d like to say about the LP?
“It’s the first time I’ve had it like this, where I’ve had complete control over the tracks made and selected.”
