Get well soon: breakbeat pioneer and friend
Get well soon: breakbeat pioneer and friend
13 December, 2007 | 9.26AMThe breakbeat industry is today sending get well soon messages to breakbeat pioneer, DJ, promoter and record label owner Paul ‘Trouble’ Arnold, who as of last week was diagnosed with Leukemia.
As head honcho of Fat! Records
, Paul was the mastermind behind the world’s longest running breakbeat club night Chew The Fat!, and responsible for giving a label home to some of the biggest breaks artists in the world.
He also ran the influential Certificate 18 Records and occasionally contributed to Beatportal, doing breakbeat reviews.
Fortunately, Paul has a treatable version of the blood disease, and has been admitted to Kings College Hospital in London for a course of Chemotherapy, where it is believed he will remain for the next few months.
For anyone who doesn’t know Paul, he is nothing short of a legend in the breakbeat world.
Always with a cheeky grin of his face, Paul is the epitome of break’s we-don’t-take-ourselves-too-seriously attitude.
The first club night I ever reviewed for DJ Magazine many moons ago was Chew The Fat! in east London.
Nervous and still wet behind the ears, Paul welcomed me into the Fat! bosom by thrusting 12 drinks tokens into my hand - that’s the kind of promoter he is, always making sure everyone’s having a good time and suitably trolleyed.
In typical Paul Arnold and Fat! style, an official message from Fat! Records was optimistic and full of jokes.
“All enquiries re: visits, flowers (not allowed), blow up dolls and strippers should be passed through Paul’s girlfriend, Catherine,” read the statement.
“Paul faces a very serious illness, but does so with the same grin, charm and optimism that he does with every challenge he ever faced. With his friends and colleagues behind him, he remains unbeatable.
“He wants you to know he is looking forward to getting well and being back amongst us soon.”
If you’d like send Paul a ‘Get Well’ soon card, the address is below.
