Orbital
are a British electronic music band founded by brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll
.
The band formed in 1988 and dissolved in 2004, before reforming again in 2009 for a series of one off appearances.
The name Orbital
is a reference to the M25 circular motorway surrounding Greater London, which was key to the illegal rave and party scene in the acid house era.
Orbital’s first release ‘Chime’ was recorded on their father’s cassette deck and was released on Oh Zone Records in December 1989.
During the mid to late 1990s, the band were considered one of the greatest live acts in British music and played at Woodstock and Glastonbury Festival.
Orbital
were known for putting on highly-charged live shows that included live visuals and richly-textured electronic sounds. During their live sets, Orbital often wore glasses with flashlights on each side, something that was highlighted on the cover of their 2002 album release ‘The Altogether’.
