BOOKA SHADE - PRESS BIOGRAPHY - 2010

In music, insists Arno Kammermeier, there can be no compromise.

“You have to reduce everything to its core, and ask yourself, ‘is this what we do?’; ‘do I truly feel this?’; ‘do we love this 100%?’,” he yammers, in a roundabout attempt to explain the genesis of Booka Shade’s new artist album, ‘More!’. “Anybody can produce a nice, okay track, one which works on the dancefloor, but to produce something personal - music that is the very essence of who you are - that is much more difficult.”

Walter Merziger, his production partner, nods: “We’ve produced thousands of tracks together and, by now, we have an almost psychic connection, musically. But, still, we are constantly interrogating what we do. Is it fresh? Is it different? And you have to force yourself to do this; people are lazy. But when you stop questioning your work, it’s time to give up.”

We could talk about the practical detail of how this all worked - the ban on any sounds Booka Shade had used previously; 17 months and endless gigabytes of experimentation and refinement; the long hours sketching ideas in hotel rooms, or working in their Berlin studio - but, frankly, who cares? The important thing is what ‘More!’ sounds like… and, well, it sounds immense....

Booka Shade is a pair of Berlin-based producers by the names of Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger.

They released their first single ‘Kind Of Good’ on Touché in 1995.

In 2002, the duo teamed up with DJ T and fellow producers M.A.N.D.Y. [a] to start Get Physical Music [l]

Their first full album, ‘Memento’, released in 2004 on their own label gained them popularity, but the release of ‘Body Language’ with M.A.N.D.Y. placed them at the top of charts worldwide.  By 2005, the track had been given plenty of international radio airtime and was even named the Ibiza Track of the Season.

Quickly after that came the release of ‘Mandarine Girl’ and soon the duo were out touring, playing their music live.  Their performances soon landed them a slot in the Sonar Festival, opening for the Depeche Mode, and eventually touring with Rokysopp.

With the release of their second full-length album ‘Movements’ in 2006, they embarked on a 20 month Movements World Tour where they played close to 150 live shows.  Within the year they received many awards such as Best Live Act & Best Album by Resident Advisor, #2 Producers of the Year by Groove Magazine, Best Live Act, by Germany’s Top DJ’s and the list goes on.

2008 brought the release of the ‘Movements – Tour Edition’ which was a re-release of the 2006 album plus a live DVD and bonus material.

They also released their third studio album entitled ‘The Sun & The Neon Light’.

Booka Shade are a pair of Berlin-based producers by the names of Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger.  They released their first single ‘Kind Of Good’ on Touché in 1995, but didn’t quite break into the scene until years later.  In 2002, the duo teamed up with DJ T and fellow producers M.A.N.D.Y. [a] to start Get Physical Music [l].  As the label’s success increasingly grew, Booka Shade became known for their production skills.

Quickly after that came the release of ‘Mandarine Girl’, another hit, and soon the duo were out touring, playing their music live.  Their performances soon landed them a slot in the Sonar Festival, opening for the Depeche Mode, and eventually touring with Rokysopp.

With the release of their second full-length album ‘Movements’ in 2006, the duo moved up to new heights.  They embarked on a 20 month Movements World Tour where they played close to 150 live shows.  Within the year they received many awards such as Best Live Act & Best Album by Resident Advisor, #2 Producers of the Year by Groove Magazine, Best Live Act, by Germany’s Top DJ’s and the list goes on.
