There are not many young people in electronic music that have had such a huge success as quickly as Florian Meindl. By the age of 21, he had already released tracks on Stil vor Talent, Resopal, Trapez, Session Deluxe and Kling Klong and started his own label Flash Recordings together with Oliver Koletzki.
But let’s rewind a little.
Florian was born into the idyllic setting of a 3000-people village in upper Austria. Early on, as a young teenager, he got infected with the virus of electronic music, quickly falling in love with house, Drum’n’Bass and techno. He quickly ended up playing in Austria’s big clubs supporting DJs like Sven Väth, Claude Young or Ricardo Villalobos. But that was not enough for the ambitious producer. His constant urge to get better is what drives Florian. After excursions into the production of ambient jazz and loungy Drum’n’Bass, it was in 2004 that he decided to focus fully on the production of 4/4 techno and house. After a release on Balkon Records that was praised by the Chicago House elite, he sent out a Demo CD to the Berlin-based producer and DJ Oliver Koletzki, who had just started his label Stil vor Talent and was on the lookout for some fresh blood. Immediately convinced by Florian’s precise production skills and great innovative minimal sound, he signed him for a release on the compilation “Talente mit Stil”. The track became a huge success, paving the way for Florian’s solo EP “Sputnik” on Stil vor Talent.
In 2005 Florian moved to Berlin for the summer. Inspired by the relentless party scene, he produced tracks for Resopal, Trapez and Session Deluxe, defining his signature sound that can be placed between the poles of tough minimal techno and more melodic electro. His workaholic-attitude resulted in many releases for the above labels, also getting him an interview in the style-defining German electronic music magazine De:Bug. He started to play all around Europe; his tight and innovative DJ sets have made him a popular choice for bookers and promoters looking for a high-quality act.
However, Florian is not easily satisfied.
The urge to constantly wanting to sharpen his production skills and producing new music made him leave Berlin after only three months in exchange for London, where he started a course in music production. “I wanted to continue learning about the production of music and getting better at what I do. Already, I have learned so much here about sampling and the music business,” he explains. “Firstly, I am a musician. Music is the soul that drives me. But I find it very important to be perfect at what I do. That’s why the technical side of things is essential for me.”
Florian Meindl is a workaholic and a perfectionist. Not only in his DJing and production. Together with his friend Oliver Koletzki he started Flash Recordings in autumn 2006, a label primarily dedicated to releasing their collective music. However, today Flash also releases other artists such as the established producers Daso, Lützenkirchen or newcomers such as Michael Strauss. For Flash, Florian Meindl takes on the role of A&R;scouting new artists and being responsible for the release schedule and graphics of the quickly growing label.
In 2009, Florian will keep working at the forefront of today’s electronic music scene. With new releases on Trapez and Herzblut in the pipeline, things are looking up for the talented producer. With his label Flash Recordings he has positioned himself not only as a wanted DJ and qualified producer, but also as a label manager and mover in a fast scene.
