Erick Morillo
is a Columbian-American house music DJ and producer.
He has produced under several aliases such as Ministers De la Funk, The Dronez
, RAW, Smooth Touch
, RBM, Deep Soul
, Club Ultimate
, Li’l Mo Ying Yang]], and Reel 2 Real
.
Born in Santa Marta, Columbia, he moved to Union City, New Jersey where he attended a Catholic grammar school followed by Emerson High School (graduated in ’89).
After he began to DJ, he enrolled himself at the Center for the Media Arts where he studied audio engineering.
While working at a club in nearby Weehawken, Morillo met Latin reggae star El General, with whom Morillo became friends and led to the collaboration that created ‘Muevelo’ which went platinum.
In 1994, under his Reel 2 Real alias, he was signed to Strictly Rhythm
and released one of his biggest hits ‘I Like to Move It’. The single ranked highly in several charts and launched his international DJing career.
Fearing that his financial success from Real 2 Real may have hurt both his creative drive and his street credibility, Morillo abandoned the Reel 2 Real alias in 1996 and began production as Erick Morillo.
In 1997 he launched the Double Platinum management company and his own label, Subliminal Records.
He has hosted his Subliminal parties across the globe at clubs located in New York City, Miami, and Ibiza.
Morillo was crowned Best International DJ in 2002 and Best House DJ in 1999 and 2001 at the Pacha Ibiza awards.
He has also appeared on MTV UK, MTV Ibiza, presented the UK Dancestar Awards and starred in a seven-part TV series documenting his life as a touring DJ.
