Daft Punk [a] is an electronic music duo consisting of French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (born February 8, 1974) and Thomas Bangalter (born January 3, 1975).

The duo met in 1987 at Lycée Carnot, a secondary school in Paris.  They started a small rock band (named Darlin’) with fellow students which led to opening acts for Sterolab across the UK.  The band broke up after a few months, and the duo began experimenting with electronic music under their new Daft Punk alias.

In 1993, they met with Stuart Macmillan (co-founder of Soma Quality Recordings), and gave him their debut single ‘The New Wave’, which contained future hit ‘Alive’. They returned to the studio in May of ’05 to record their first commercially successful album, ‘Da Funk’.

The band signed with Virgin Records in September 1996 and made a deal through which they licensed their tracks to the major label through their production company, Daft Trax.

In 1997, the ‘Homework’ album was released and was a massive success containing tracks such as ‘Da Funk’, ‘Alive’, and ‘Around the World’.

2001 saw the release of their ‘Discovery’ album with hits like ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ and ‘One More Time’.

Two years after, they released their first film entitled ‘Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem’.

On September 13th, 2004 the duo went in to the studio for six weeks to create their ‘Human After All’ album which was released in March of 2005.

On May 21, 2006, Daft Punk premiered their first directed film, ‘Daft Punk’s Electroma’ at the Cannes Film Festival sidebar Director’s Fortnight.

On February 8, 2009, Daft Punk won Grammy Awards for ‘Alive 2007’ and its single ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’.
