Studio Study: DC Breaks
It’s always an honor when we’re given the chance to pick the brains of the most studio-savvy producers on the scene, especially when production approaches can be so shrouded in mystery and blocked with sealed lips. This week, however, we got to demystify the process with the infamous UK drum & bass duo DC Breaks. Rather than dancing around their techniques and troubles, the guys were particularly forthcoming about their studio flow.
With their recent release on RAM Records, the Firez EP, blazing a trail on our D&B charts, it seems even more appropriate to rush the news to our readers. Take a peek below for our Q&A with DC Breaks’ Chris Page.
Deadmau5 almost sets himself on fire in New York
According to the New York Post, Deadmau5 nearly caused a huge problem at a gig at NYC club Provocateur last Friday when he lit an airhorn on fire during his new song, ”The Veldt.”

Bomb Alert! Green Velvet - Preacher Man (Remixes)
In the various lore of dance music history, few tales offer the kismet of Curtis ”Green Velvet” Jones accidentally recording the sermon on ”Preacher Man” by southside Chicago radio preacher Rev. Trotter (further mythology that the sermon was by Aretha Franklin’s father, CL Franklin, seems to be false). The theme of adults “playing house” made for the perfect double entendre in the city’s hedonistic house music scene, and marked the evolution of the jacking producer already known as Cajmere to his more techno-fied Green Velvet guise.
See Uffe’s gorgeous new video for “I’ll Leave Soon”
We’re pretty psyched to exclusively offer to you Uffe‘s amazingly pretty Colors Outside EP on Beatport, which just came out on Monday via Pets Recordings. But we might even be more excited to show you the gorgeously shot new video for its a-side, ”I’ll Leave Soon.”

Track Of The Day: Paperclip People - Throw (Slam’s RTM Remix)
It’s impossible to pick one Carl Craig track as his definitive work, but as Paperclip People, nothing touches the epic ”Throw." That five-note bassline has set more dancefloors on fire than 100 other top tracks of the moment combined. So was a remix by Scottish stompers Slam necessary? No, the original has been doing just fine for 15-plus years. Is it welcome addition to the Planet E catalog? You betcha. And guess what? We’ve got it exclusively on Beatport right now.

Beatportal interviews Ame about their newly released live album
Ten years ago, Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann began producing jazz-flavored deep house under the name Ame for Berlin-based powerhouse Sonar Kollektiv. Fast-forward to 2012, and Ame have turned out some of the the biggest dancefloor hits of the past decade, mainly on their own Innervisions label (run with Dixon and Henrik Schwarz), shattering almost all conceivable limits to the house and techno genres. Since 2010, the duo has also created one of dance music’s most exciting live shows—one that doesn’t rely on eye-popping visuals as much as pure musical energy.
To celebrate their 10 years of making music, on Monday Ame released a live album, compiling live recordings of their signature tunes played across the globe, then tweaking and mixing them back together into one continuous performance document. An EP of three tunes from the collection—including their beloved remixes of Underworld and UNKLE—was also just released in April.
Beatportal spoke with Frank Wiedemann about the process behind creating Ame Live, how playing live affects their creative process, and what’s ahead for the Innervisions crew.

Track Of The Day: Addison Groove - Sooperlooper
As much removed as any current hit from Skrillex is from foundational dubstep landmarks like Skream‘s ”Midnight Request Line,” so too are the latest manifestations from a long list of dubstep’s pioneers. Many of the veterans that helped to shape that spatial and hypnotic sound are returning to the experimentation stages and developing something new once again. Take for instance the sounds of Addison Groove, the project of dubstep DJ and producer Headhunter. Those Headhunter tracks stretched back into drum & bass, but Addison Groove’s latest branches are often influenced by Chicago ghetto house, though he adapts it with his own functionality for today’s dancefloor. Headhunter’s Tempa classic ”Sleepwalker” should server as a nice contrast to any of the tracks on Addison Groove’s latest full-length album, Transistor Rhythm.
Introducing: Climbers
Mexicali, Mexico is hardly known as a hotbed for deep-house talent, but all the same it’s churned out some of the scene’s newest prospects in Climbers, the duo comprised of Jay Blakk and Kiko Deal, two high-school friends who came together just last year to take over the dancefloor with their sultry, low-slung vocal jams. They may have a limited discography so far, but perhaps that’s why everyone’s so impressed with their brand-new EP for Culprit, Laws Of Attraction—an incredible early outing that we’re proud to offer exclusively on Beatport. It’s already got steady support from Art Department, James Teej, My Favorite Robot, Tanner Ross, and plenty more, and the pair have got another EP expected later in the month on Nurvous.

Watch the video for UMEK’s “Slicing & Dicing”
Summer is almost here, which means beach parties will abound, from—as some Swedes once said—Miami to Ibiza. So is it a bit wicked that the video for techno titan UMEK‘s latest release, ”Slicing & Dicing,” on 1605, unveils the secret lives of hermit crabs?

Buraka Som Sistema: A Few Of My Favorite Machines
Last year’s Komba really helped put Lisbon, Portugal-based kuduro hybridists Buraka Som Sistema on the dance world map, following up on their debut LP, Black Diamond, and further cementing on record what their legendary ass-shakin’ live shows do for the club. In that respect, the band more or less put the decision of choosing their third single into the hands of their fans—and the crowd’s reaction spoke unanimously to them: ”Tira o Pe” would be that tune. Lucky for us, they’ve decided to release that single, and its requisite remixes from Roby Howler, JWLS, and Jay Fay, exclusively on Beatport.
